Mamdani calls Netanyahu 'a war criminal'; a Jerusalem Post headline says, in its own voice, that Mamdani supports Hamas
New York's mayor told CNN the court's arrest warrant for Israel's prime minister should be honoured when he visits for the UN General Assembly. Netanyahu answered that he will 'tell the truth' in Thursday's speech. Five reports carry the exchange. They differ on whose charge is stated as fact and whose is attributed.
What each side said. On Monday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani told CNN that Netanyahu is "a war criminal and an architect of a horrific genocide of the Palestinian people", Reuters reports via Al-Monitor. The Jerusalem Post and JNS say he repeated his call for Netanyahu's arrest. On Tuesday, Reuters reports, Netanyahu accused Mamdani of supporting Hamas. He said he would use his UN speech to defend Israel's military actions against the Palestinians.
One charge attributed, one stated. Both sides' words are charges. The reports do not treat them the same way.
| Report | Mamdani's charge | The Hamas charge |
|---|---|---|
| Reuters, via Al-Monitor | quoted, credited to him | "accusing", credited to Netanyahu |
| Jerusalem Post, morning | "he believes", credited to him | not carried |
| Jerusalem Post, afternoon | not quoted | headline: "for supporting Hamas", no attribution |
| Arutz Sheva | "accusations against Israel" | not carried |
| JNS | arrest call only | not carried |
What the mayor can do. Only the Jerusalem Post's morning report says Mamdani "acknowledged that he lacks the authority to arrest him". Only its afternoon report says the warrant was issued by the International Criminal Court.
What is not settled - None of the five reports quotes Netanyahu's own words about Hamas. Only his pledge to "tell the truth" is quoted. - No report carries a reply from Mamdani to Netanyahu. - Four of the five reports are from Israeli outlets. We hold no Palestinian outlet on this exchange, and no American outlet apart from Reuters.
What this is about. The elected mayor of the city that hosts the United Nations says a visiting head of government should be arrested on an international warrant. That head of government says the mayor is on the side of Hamas.
How it got here. On 7 October 2023, Hamas led an attack on southern Israel and took hostages back into Gaza. Israel answered with a war in Gaza that is still the centre of this dispute. In November 2024 the International Criminal Court, a court in The Hague that tries individuals for war crimes and crimes against humanity, issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former defence minister, Yoav Gallant, over the conduct of that war. Israel rejects the charges and says the court has no jurisdiction over it. Separately, South Africa accuses Israel of genocide at the International Court of Justice. Israel denies it, and the case has not been decided.
Zohran Mamdani campaigned for mayor of New York City in 2025 on a promise that the city would honour the warrant if Netanyahu came. He won, and took office in January 2026.
Who is involved, and why. Netanyahu is Israel's prime minister. A Jerusalem Post photo caption says he is campaigning for a general election. Every September, leaders come to New York for the UN General Assembly. Netanyahu is due to speak on Thursday. The United States is not a member of the International Criminal Court and has no duty to act on its warrants. Arrests in New York are made by police and prosecutors. The morning Jerusalem Post report says Mamdani accepts that the power to arrest Netanyahu is not his.
What is at stake. In practice, not an arrest. Two elected politicians are arguing in front of two audiences, and the argument decides whether the warrant, or the war, leads the coverage of the visit.
Where it stands. Netanyahu is expected in New York this week. None of the reports we hold says any authority plans to act on the warrant.
What is being argued about
- Mamdani's charge that Netanyahu is 'a war criminal' and an 'architect of a horrific genocide'
- Netanyahu's charge that Mamdani supports Hamas, stated as fact in one headline
- Whether the International Criminal Court's warrant can be enforced in New York
- Netanyahu's pledge to 'tell the truth' at the UN on Thursday
