Mediapart leads with an evicted 87-year-old; Obozrevatel says only that Spain's "legislators did not agree"
On Friday Spain's parliament rejected the government's measures for tenants, and people marched for housing. Mediapart and Obozrevatel agree on the vote but tell different stories about who it hurts. Neither says who voted no.
What both carry. Mediapart and Obozrevatel say Spain's parliament rejected measures the government had proposed for tenants. Mediapart says the vote was on Friday. Housing marches followed. Neither report gives the vote count or lists the measures.
Where they differ. Mediapart opens with one person. Obozrevatel opens with a crowd and a stand-off.
| Mediapart | Obozrevatel | |
|---|---|---|
| Leads with | Eviction of Maricarmen Abascal, 87, in Madrid | "Thousands" protesting |
| The vote | "Rejected on Friday by Parliament" | "Legislators did not agree" |
| Names a person evicted | Yes | No |
| Names who voted no | No | No |
| Turnout | "Large demonstrations", no figure | "Thousands", no source |
What the readings found. Two separate blind readings agree on three points:
- Mediapart names the person harmed and gives her age.
- Both reports say lawmakers blocked the measures. Neither names a party.
- Obozrevatel's "thousands" carries no source.
One reading also flagged Mediapart's "a large part of the country was moved". It describes public feeling but gives no measure of it. The other reading did not flag it.
What is not settled.
- Which parties voted against, and by what margin. Neither report says.
- What the measures contained. Neither report lists them.
- How many marched. Neither report gives a sourced figure.
- Only Mediapart reports Ms Abascal's eviction. We hold no second account of it.
What this is about. Spain's government wanted new protections for people who rent their homes. Parliament voted them down, and people marched.
How it got here. Housing is one of the biggest political issues in Spain. Rents have risen fastest in the big cities, above all Madrid and Barcelona. They have also risen fast in places popular with tourists, where short-term holiday lets compete with homes for long-term tenants. Many young Spaniards cannot afford to leave their parents' home. In May 2023 Spain passed its first national housing law. It let regions cap rents in areas where housing is under most pressure, and it added some protections against eviction. Tenants' unions said it did not go far enough. Landlords' groups and the right-wing opposition said rent caps would mean fewer homes offered for rent. Since 2024, tenants' unions and neighbourhood groups have organised large housing marches in Spanish cities.
Who is involved.
- The government. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of the Socialist party (PSOE) leads a minority coalition with the left-wing alliance Sumar. It proposed the tenant measures.
- Parliament. The coalition does not have a majority on its own. It needs votes from smaller parties to pass laws, so a bill can fail when one of them withholds support. The reports we hold do not say which parties voted against this one.
- Tenants and their unions. The measures were meant to protect them, and they are the ones marching.
- Landlords and the opposition. They have argued that tighter rules on renting put owners off letting their homes.
What is at stake. For tenants: whether rents and evictions get new limits. For the government: whether it can pass its own programme at all.
Where it stands. Mediapart says parliament rejected the measures on Friday. Marches followed. Neither report says what the government will do next.
