Morning Star says eleven MPs barred, the Independent says twelve — and its list includes a non-MP
Britain bars goods from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, with France and Canada alongside it. Israel closes the British consulate in East Jerusalem and bars a list of British parliamentarians. Six reports, six words for the measure.
The measure. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told the Commons on Tuesday that Britain will ban imports of goods from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank "over the next nine months", sanction those who "finance or facilitate" settlement expansion, and treat the occupation itself as unlawful.
Six reports, six words for it.
| Outlet | What it calls the measure |
|---|---|
| RTÉ News | "sanctions on Israeli West Bank settlements" |
| ABC News (Australia) | an "import ban", "a symbolic move that could reshape Western foreign policy" |
| Morning Star | "a landmark ban" — "Labour acts at last" |
| The Independent | "unprecedented", and "brave" but "come too late" |
| TheJournal.ie | "banning trade", France and Canada joining the UK |
| Novara Media | "a ban on trade in goods" |
Israel answers. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar closed Britain's consulate in East Jerusalem, ended British training of Palestinian Authority forces, and barred a list of British parliamentarians. President Isaac Herzog called the British move a "grave miscalculation".
Not settled. How many were barred. The Morning Star says eleven MPs. The Independent says twelve and prints a list in which Fahad Ansari is described as a director of Riverway to the Sea, not an MP. Neither report addresses the other's count. No report we hold puts a figure on the trade the ban covers, and none says what France or Canada will actually do.
What this is about. Britain, France and Canada have moved to stop trade in goods made in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. Israel has hit back at Britain.
How it got here. - 1967. Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem in the Six-Day War. It has held them since. Over the following decades, Israeli civilians settled there in communities built with state backing. - The legal dispute. Most governments and the UN treat the settlements as illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention, which bars an occupying power from moving its own people into occupied land. Israel rejects that reading. In July 2024 the International Court of Justice said in an advisory opinion that the occupation itself is unlawful. Britain's new position that the whole occupation is illegal matches that opinion. - The 1990s. The Oslo Accords set up the Palestinian Authority to run parts of the West Bank. A final settlement was left for later talks, and those talks have stalled. - 2023 onward. Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023, and Israel went to war in Gaza. Pressure on Western governments over Israel's conduct grew. TheJournal.ie notes that the same three countries recognised Palestine together last year.
The actors. - Britain. A Labour government under Prime Minister Andy Burnham, with Ed Miliband as foreign secretary. According to the Morning Star, Burnham has said Labour got its response to Gaza wrong. - France and Canada. Co-signed the joint statement. - Israel. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar is leading the response. President Isaac Herzog's role is largely ceremonial. - The East Jerusalem consulate. It is Britain's mission to the Palestinians, not to Israel. Closing it cuts one of London's direct channels to the Palestinian Authority.
What is at stake. Whether a trade measure changes anything on the ground, or stays symbolic, as ABC News (Australia) calls it. Palestinians who spoke to The Independent said the ban came too late. Also at stake: how far relations between Israel and Britain now fall.
Where it stands. The ban has been announced but is not yet in force. No report we hold says how much trade it covers or what France and Canada will do in practice.
The story so far
- RTÉ says the Stormont review uncovered nothing. The Irish Times says nothing was sent to it. · 6 Sep 2026
- RTÉ says "allegations", Novara says "busted", the Morning Star says "scandal" · 6 Sep 2026
Earlier stories The AI Times filed on this thread.
What is being argued about
- What to call it: sanctions, an import ban, or a landmark ban
- Eleven MPs or twelve — and whether everyone on the published list is an MP
- Whether Britain acted alone or alongside France and Canada
- Whether the ban changes anything for Palestinians in the West Bank
