MSNBC says "Kevin Warsh raised interest rates"; the Guardian says the "Fed committee votes unanimously"
The first US rate rise since July 2023, a quarter point to 3.75%–4%. Of the 31 reports we hold, eight put Trump in the headline, five say the vote was unanimous, and three cannot agree on what markets did.
Fed approves interest rate hike, signals one more to come this year as published by CNBC · seen at
CNBC
Agreed. The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate by a quarter point on Wednesday, to a range of 3.75%–4% — the first rise since July 2023. Five reports say the vote was unanimous, six print the new range, and the committee's own projections point to one more rise before the year ends.
Who did it. MSNBC makes it one man's act: "Kevin Warsh raised interest rates by a quarter of a point." The Guardian's standfirst says the "Fed committee votes unanimously". Eight headlines set the decision against the president — the Sydney Morning Herald's "Fed defies Trump", NOS's "negeert wens Trump" (ignores Trump's wish), Público's "contraria Trump". CNBC and Reuters do not mention him.

An-Nahar
The dollar rose against the euro, which fell 0.2% to $1.15173; gold pared its gains
What is causing the inflation. Six reports name a cause, each in its own voice. The Hill says the rise came "to tame inflation amid the Iran war"; Le Figaro blames energy prices "liée aux tensions au Moyen-Orient"; An-Nahar adds tariffs and the AI boom. CNBC, the New York Times and the Washington Post name no cause at all.
Not settled. No report we hold quotes the Fed itself on what is driving prices. Four reports ask what the quarter point does to a mortgage, a car loan or a savings account; none of the 31 quotes anyone who pays one.
What this is about. The US central bank has made borrowing more expensive while the president was publicly demanding the opposite.
How it got here. The Federal Reserve sets the benchmark US interest rate through its Federal Open Market Committee, and that rate feeds into mortgages, credit cards, car loans and savings returns. Its stated inflation target is 2%, An-Nahar reports. The Fed last raised rates in July 2023; over the two years after that it cut from a range of 5.25%–5.5% down to 3.5%–3.75%, then held steady through five consecutive announcements, according to NOS. Donald Trump returned to the White House last year and collided with the then chair, Jerome Powell, whom he had appointed in his first term: NOS records that he called Powell a "loser", threatened to sack him and accused him of fraud. When Powell's term ended, Trump chose Kevin Warsh, who had argued for lower rates. "If Kevin is in place, rates go down," NOS quotes Trump as saying. Warsh took office in late May, the Independent reports, and Wednesday was his first policy move.
Why prices are high is contested in the reporting. NOS points to the global trade war Trump launched in April and then to energy costs from the war in the Middle East; An-Nahar adds his tariff policy and the continuing AI boom. NOS says US inflation has been stuck around 4%. No report we hold has the Fed naming a cause.
What is at stake. Presidents do not vote on US rates — the committee does — so the question running under every report is whether the central bank is acting independently. NOS notes that Warsh explains his decisions less than his predecessors did, which is why the doubt persists. Beneath that sits what households pay each month.
Where it stands. The rate is 3.75%–4%, with another rise projected this year. An-Nahar reports that the central banks of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and the UAE each followed with 25 basis points, and that the White House called the decision unfortunate.
What is being argued about
Whether one man raised the rate or a committee voted unanimously to
Whether the decision was defiance of Trump, or a rate decision he has nothing to do with
What markets did in the hour after — gains, a pullback, or a stronger dollar
What the quarter point costs a borrower, and who is never asked
What the 31 reports carryChart
A count of what was printed, not a judgement of any outlet.

One man, or nine votes
Ten of the reports name the chair; five say the vote was unanimous, and one of those does both in a single line. Where only the chair is named, the decision reads as a personal act against the president — eight reports put Trump in the headline. The range itself, 3.75% to 4%, appears in seven.

What markets did, and what it costs to borrow
Three reports describe the reaction after the decision and they do not agree: one says stocks pulled back, one says markets answered with gains, one says the dollar rose and gold gave back part of its climb. Four reports ask instead what the quarter point does to a mortgage, a car loan or a savings account. None of the 31 reports we hold quotes a borrower by name.

Rzeczpospolita's headline says markets answered the decision with gains, while Reuters reports stocks pulling back and short-term bond yields rising. An-Nahar records the dollar up against the euro and gold paring its gains, so the reports we hold do not agree on what markets did.

unverifiedThe inflation the Fed is responding to is driven by the Iran war and higher oil prices.
The Sydney Morning Herald, Le Figaro, Rzeczpospolita and NOS each assert the oil-price or Middle East link in their own voice rather than attributing it, and NOS's only named source, a Rabobank analyst, says the cause lies in the Gulf. An-Nahar adds tariffs and the AI boom to the same list, and no report we hold quotes the Fed on the cause.

Fed committee votes unanimously to raise interest rate by a quarter-percentage point to a range of 3.75% to 4% The US Federal Reserve voted to raise interest rates on Wednesday for the first time since 2023 as the central bank continues to fight to tamp down inflation. The Fed’s open market committee voted unanimously to raise its benchmark interest rate by a quarter-percentage point to a range of 3.75% to 4%. This is the first time the Fed has raised rates since July 2023 and potentially sets Kevin Warsh, the current Fed chair, on a collision course with Donald Trump.

The Federal Reserve raised interest rates by a quarter of a point Wednesday, marking the first such increase in three years. The move came in the face of discouraging data on inflation and consumer prices that forced the hand of Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh just four months after Donald Trump appointed him. The developments were not a foregone conclusion. On the one hand, the economic data suggested that inflation was proving stubborn, making higher interest rates a necessity. In fact, MS NOW highlighted a Duke University survey, published earlier this week, which found a nearly unanimous consensu
