New York Times account: Trump ordered, then halted, a Houthi strike. Axios account: he only weighed one and chose to wait
Four Lebanese and Israeli outlets carry two American press accounts of the same days, and the accounts disagree on whether Trump ever gave an order. Nobody on the record has said which one is right.
Two accounts, one weekend. Three outlets carry the New York Times account: Trump ordered a strike on the Houthis, or was about to, and then called it off. An-Nahar also carries the Axios account: US officials say Trump weighed an order and decided to wait.
| Outlet | What it says Trump did | Who it credits |
|---|---|---|
| Haaretz | "reportedly ordered to strike", then reversed "as warplanes were being prepared" | a press report |
| Al-Modon | backed down "at the last minute" | New York Times |
| LBCI | "changed his position several times" amid Saudi pressure | New York Times |
| An-Nahar | was about to strike, then called it off; also that he "considered" an order and "decided to wait" | New York Times; Axios, citing US officials |
Who pushed. Haaretz says Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged the US to step in. LBCI and An-Nahar speak only of "Saudi pressure". No report quotes a Saudi official.
The phone call. An-Nahar and LBCI report that four sources told Reuters Trump called Yemen's president, Rashad al-Alimi, on Sunday. They say Alimi asked for American support. Two of the sources say Trump pledged no military help. Haaretz does not mention the call.
The Houthis. No report quotes them. Their only stated position comes from Trump, relayed by a Fox News journalist: that they agreed not to fight the United States.
Not settled. Whether an order was given. Whether Saudi Arabia asked for strikes or only applied pressure. What Trump told Alimi. An-Nahar says the White House did not comment.
This story is about whether the United States nearly opened a new front in Yemen's war this weekend, and who pushed it to.
How it got here. Yemen has been at war since 2014. That year the Houthis, an armed movement from the country's north, took the capital, Sanaa. In March 2015 Saudi Arabia led a military coalition into Yemen to restore the government the Houthis had pushed out. The war split the country. The Houthis hold Sanaa and much of the north-west. The internationally recognised government holds much of the south and east. Since April 2022 that government has been led by a Presidential Leadership Council, chaired by Rashad al-Alimi. A truce agreed the same year largely halted the Saudi air war.
The war in Gaza began in October 2023. After it started, the Houthis attacked ships in the Red Sea, saying they were acting for the Palestinians. The United States and Britain struck Houthi targets from January 2024. The United States ran a larger air campaign in 2025. That campaign ended in May 2025 with a truce between Washington and the Houthis, brokered by Oman.
The actors. The Houthis are backed by Iran, and every report here calls them "Iran-backed". Saudi Arabia borders Yemen and has fought the Houthis for a decade. Alimi's government wants foreign help against them. The United States has an interest in keeping the sea route open.
What is at stake. The Bab el-Mandeb is the narrow strait between Yemen and the Horn of Africa. It links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Ships travelling between Europe and Asia by the Suez Canal pass through it. If the United States strikes, it goes back into a war it had stepped out of. If it does not, Yemen's government faces the Houthi advance without American military help.
Where it stands. An-Nahar reports that earlier this month the Houthis took strategic areas near the strait in a swift offensive. None of the reports says a strike has been carried out. An-Nahar says the White House did not comment.

What is being argued about
- Whether Trump gave an order to strike the Houthis, or only weighed one
- Whether Saudi Arabia asked for strikes, or only applied pressure in general terms
- Trump's Sunday call with Yemen's president, and the military help he did not pledge
- The Houthi advance near the Bab el-Mandeb strait
