NOS says Israel expels Dutch diplomats; The Jerusalem Post says they must hand back their papers in seven days
Israel's foreign minister, Gideon Sa'ar, is ending the diplomatic status of Dutch diplomats in Ramallah. He ties it to a Dutch import ban that took effect this week. Outlets split on what the ban is called and on what Israel has ordered.
What happened. On 27 September Gideon Sa'ar, Israel's foreign minister, said the Dutch diplomats in Ramallah have seven days before their status ends. Four reports carry the seven-day deadline. Reuters and LBCI say Israel "revokes" their diplomatic status.
Why, in Sa'ar's words. NOS says he tied the step to Dutch "measures against Israel", including the import ban. NOS reports that he also accused the Dutch government of a "hostile stance" and of doing too little against antisemitism. The Dutch foreign ministry would not yet comment, NOS says.
Four reports, three words for the ban.
| Outlet | What it calls the Dutch measure | What it says Israel ordered |
|---|---|---|
| NOS | "boycot" in the headline; ban on goods from "illegal settlements" in the body | diplomats "must leave within seven days" |
| Arutz Sheva | "Dutch boycott of Israeli products" | surrender Israeli-issued documents in seven days |
| The Jerusalem Post | "West Bank trade ban" | return documents in seven days; immunities then expire |
| An-Nahar | ban on goods from settlements, "illegal under international law" | return accreditation in seven days |
Who bears it at the border. An-Nahar quotes a Dutch customs notice: the ban covers businesses and travellers' personal luggage. Ynet carries travellers' accounts of stricter bag checks at Schiphol.
What is not settled. Only NOS says the diplomats must leave. The three others report an order to return documents. We hold no Dutch government reply and no Palestinian voice. Only one report carries the rule on luggage.
In one sentence: Israel is punishing the Netherlands diplomatically for a Dutch ban on goods made in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
How it got here. Israel has occupied the West Bank since the 1967 war. Israeli civilians have settled there since then. An-Nahar puts their number at about 500,000, living among three million Palestinians. Most governments and the UN's top court hold that the settlements break international law. Israel disputes that. Under the Oslo Accords of the 1990s, the Palestinian Authority governs parts of the West Bank from Ramallah, and many European states keep diplomatic offices there. Israel controls entry to the territory, so those diplomats work on papers Israel issues.
The war in Gaza that followed the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023 hardened European positions on Israel. In July, NOS reports, two Dutch ministers wrote to parliament of "grave concerns" about settler violence and settlement growth. The government then announced a ban on imports from settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories and the Syrian Golan Heights. It took effect on 22 September, An-Nahar reports.
Who is involved. The Dutch government set the ban. Israel's foreign ministry is answering it. The Dutch office in Ramallah serves the Palestinian Authority. Britain, France and Canada said earlier this month that they intend to restrict trade with settlements. An-Nahar reports that Israel answered by announcing the closure of the British consulate in Jerusalem.
What is at stake. Whether trade measures against settlements now draw a diplomatic price each time. For Dutch diplomats, the question is whether they can work from Ramallah without status granted by Israel. For travellers and importers, it is what can cross the Dutch border.
Where it stands. Sa'ar set a seven-day deadline. NOS reports that Israel had earlier expelled Dutch staff from the civil-military coordination centre that monitors the Gaza ceasefire. The Dutch foreign ministry has not yet replied, NOS says.
What is being argued about
- Whether Israel ordered the Dutch diplomats to leave, or to hand back their documents
- Whether the Dutch measure is a ban on settlement goods or a boycott of Israeli products
- What the ban means for travellers' luggage at Schiphol
- Whether trade measures against settlements now carry a diplomatic cost
