Palestine TV names a 'martyr', Mashhour Yassin, 51; LBCI reports 'a Palestinian' shot by settlers
Two Arabic-language broadcasters report that a man died after settlers opened fire near Salfit in the West Bank on Thursday. One names him and the town. The other names neither and credits the Palestinian health ministry.
What both say. Palestine TV and LBCI both say Israeli settlers shot a Palestinian man in the West Bank and that he died on Thursday 1 October.
Where they differ. They disagree on who the dead man is and on the words used for the death and the attackers.
| Palestine TV (Palestinian state broadcaster) | LBCI (Lebanon) | |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Mashhour Shaher Mohammad Yassin | none given |
| Age | 51 | none given |
| Place | Yasuf, east of Salfit | "north of the West Bank" |
| Word for the death | "martyred" (استشهد) | "killed" (قُتل) |
| Word for the attackers | "settlers" in the headline, "colonists" (مستعمرين) in the body | "Israeli settlers" |
| Source given | none in the text we hold | the Palestinian health ministry |
| How he died | of wounds from an attack on the town | by settlers' gunfire |
The source behind both. Palestine TV is the Palestinian Authority's broadcaster. LBCI cites the Authority's health ministry. So both accounts rest on Palestinian official sources.
What is not settled. - We hold no account from the Israeli army, the police or the settlers. We cannot say whether any of them disputes it. - We hold no independent account. Neither report quotes a witness. - Palestine TV's text breaks off at "he said". We do not know who it goes on to quote. - We hold only LBCI's opening line. - Neither report says when the attack happened, how many settlers took part, or whether anyone else was hurt.
What this is about. Two Arabic-language broadcasters report that a Palestinian man died after Israeli settlers attacked a town in the occupied West Bank.
How it got here. Israel took the West Bank from Jordan in the 1967 war and has held it under military occupation since. Israeli civilians have since settled there, in communities built with state backing. Most states treat those settlements as unlawful under international law, and so did the International Court of Justice in its advisory opinion of July 2024. Israel disputes this.
The Oslo Accords of the 1990s divided the West Bank into zones. The Palestinian Authority runs civil affairs in the towns. Israel keeps security control over most of the territory. Settlers live under Israeli civil law. The Palestinians around them live under Israeli military law.
Violence between settlers and Palestinians goes back many years. UN agencies and Israeli and Palestinian rights groups say it became more frequent after the Hamas-led attack on Israel of 7 October 2023 and the war in Gaza that followed.
The place. Yasuf is a Palestinian town in Salfit governorate, in the north-central West Bank. Several Israeli settlements stand nearby, including Ariel, one of the largest.
The actors. - Settlers: Israeli civilians living in the West Bank. - The Israeli army: responsible for security in most of the territory, including around the settlements. - The Palestinian Authority: governs parts of the West Bank. It runs the health ministry, which records Palestinian deaths, and the broadcaster Palestine TV.
What is at stake. Whether anyone is held to account for settler attacks, and whether the army stops them, bears on whether Palestinians can stay on their land. It also shapes how hard Israel's allies press it over the settlements.
Where it stands. We hold two reports, and both rest on Palestinian official sources. We hold no Israeli or independent account of this killing.
What is being argued about
- Whether the dead man is named: one report of two names him
- 'Martyr' and 'colonists' against 'killed' and 'settlers'
- Both accounts rest on Palestinian official sources
- No Israeli or independent account is held
