Pezeshkian at the UN: IRNA leads on 'war was imposed on us', Shargh on 'victims of terrorism', An-Nahar on Hormuz and a US walkout
Iran's president spoke to the UN General Assembly on Wednesday. Five outlets carried the speech, and each put a different line first. Two Lebanese outlets report that the US delegation left the hall. We hold no US account of that walkout.
The speech. President Masoud Pezeshkian spoke to the 81st General Assembly in New York on 23 September. An-Nahar carries the only full account we hold. It says he told the Assembly that America "respects no international law". It says he wants "nuclear energy, not a nuclear bomb". And it says Iran cannot let the Strait of Hormuz carry weapons "that will be used against it".
Five outlets, five openings.
| Outlet | Leads with | Walkout? |
|---|---|---|
| IRNA (Iranian state) | "War was imposed on us"; Iran does not fear war and does not run from talks | not mentioned |
| Shargh (Iran) | "We are not terrorists, we are victims of terrorism" | not mentioned |
| An-Nahar (Lebanon) | The walkout, then "America respects no international law" and Hormuz | stated as fact, no source |
| LBCI (Lebanon) | Iran "will not surrender to military force"; nuclear energy, not a bomb | credited to Reuters |
| Washington Post (US) | The speech came "after Trump threatens annihilation" | not mentioned |
The walkout. An-Nahar says the US delegation left the hall and gives no source. LBCI credits the walkout to Reuters. Both may rest on the same news-agency report.
What is not settled - Whether the US delegation walked out. No US outlet or US official in our reports says so, and no report gives a reason. - What threat the Post means. We hold only its headline and one line: Pezeshkian dropped his planned remarks after hearing Trump's speech on Tuesday. - Five of the nine reports are a headline with no text.
What this is. Iran's president used the yearly UN General Assembly debate to set out Iran's terms after a war with the United States and Israel.
How it got here. Iran and the United States have been adversaries since the 1979 revolution that created the Islamic Republic. For two decades the main dispute has been Iran's nuclear programme. Iran says the programme is civilian. The US and Israel have said Iran could use it to build a bomb. A 2015 deal, the JCPOA, limited the programme in return for lifting sanctions. Donald Trump took the US out of that deal in 2018 and brought the sanctions back. Hostility between Iran and Israel sharpened after the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023 and the Gaza war that followed. In 2024 the two states struck each other directly. In June 2025 Israel attacked Iran and the US bombed Iranian nuclear sites.
The reports we hold do not describe the latest war in detail. An-Nahar quotes Pezeshkian saying the US and Israel attacked Iran and that the Supreme Leader was killed "without a legal framework". None of these reports gives a US or Israeli account of those events.
The actors. - Masoud Pezeshkian has been Iran's president since 2024. In Iran the Supreme Leader, not the president, has the final word on war and on the nuclear programme. - The United States, under President Trump. The Washington Post says Trump addressed the Assembly the day before. - The UN General Assembly is where every member state can speak each September. Its resolutions bind no one.
What is at stake. The Strait of Hormuz lies between Iran and Oman. It is the only sea route out of the Gulf, and much of the world's traded oil passes through it. Iran says it will not let ships in the strait carry weapons aimed at it. Terms like these may decide whether the nuclear dispute goes back to talks or back to strikes.
Where it stands. Pezeshkian says Iran believes in diplomacy but will not give in to force. We hold no US response to the speech.
What is being argued about
- Which line of the speech each outlet put first
- Whether the US walkout is reported as fact or credited to a news agency
- Iran's terms on the Strait of Hormuz and its nuclear programme
- Who each report names as the actor in the war and in the Supreme Leader's death
