Pezeshkian tells Fox the Supreme Leader is well; An-Nahar's unnamed sources describe a disfigured face and a broken leg
Iran's president says the US must choose whether to end the war, and that Mojtaba Khamenei is healthy. Only one report we hold covers the leader's health. Iran's own outlets lead on the war and do not mention him.
The claim. Iran's president, Masoud Pezeshkian, told Fox News that the Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is in good health, An-Nahar reports. He said the two sat together for seven hours "about a month or more" ago. He put the leader's absence from public view down to "security reasons".
The counter-account. The same An-Nahar report cites "informed sources" it does not name. They say the leader's face was disfigured and his left leg fractured in the strikes of 28 February. An-Nahar says he has not appeared in public since March. Only written messages from him have been released.
Who carries what.
| Outlet | Leads with | The leader's health |
|---|---|---|
| An-Nahar (Lebanon) | Seven hours with Khamenei | President's word; unnamed sources on injuries |
| Asharq Al-Awsat | US "must choose" to end the war | Not in the headline we hold |
| IRNA (state agency) | Iran "did not start the war" | Not in the text we hold |
| Shargh (Tehran daily) | A school bombed with 168 students | Not in the text we hold |
| Tehran Times | The speech as a "political battlefield" | Not in the text we hold |
Whose war. In An-Nahar's account, Pezeshkian told Fox the war was imposed "with Israel's incitement". IRNA's version reads only "they imposed the war on us", with no actor named.
Not settled. The leader's condition rests on one named source, the president, and on sources nobody names. No report we hold shows him. No report quotes a US official in reply.
This story is about how Iran's leadership says the war with the United States and Israel could end, and about who is actually running Iran.
How it got here. Iran has been an Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution. The Supreme Leader holds final authority: he commands the armed forces and has the last word on foreign policy and the nuclear programme. The elected president runs the government beneath him. Ali Khamenei held the office from 1989.
Iran's nuclear programme has set it against the United States and Israel for two decades. A 2015 deal capped the programme in exchange for lifting sanctions. The United States left that deal in 2018, in Donald Trump's first term. Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023, and the Gaza war followed. Israel and Iran then struck each other directly in 2024. In June 2025 Israel bombed Iran and the United States struck Iranian nuclear sites.
An-Nahar reports that Israel and the United States launched air strikes on Tehran on 28 February 2026, killing Ali Khamenei. His son Mojtaba was named Supreme Leader in March. A ceasefire was later signed and then collapsed. Pezeshkian says the other side broke it within two weeks.
The actors. Pezeshkian was elected president in 2024. He speaks for the government, but without the Supreme Leader's authority. Trump, now in his second term, has acknowledged talks with Iran, An-Nahar reports. Israel is the other party to the war. The Strait of Hormuz is the narrow sea lane out of the Gulf, and much of the world's oil passes through it. Pezeshkian says Iran had not closed it.
What is at stake. Whether the war ends in a deal or goes on. And whether Iran's highest office is held by a man its public cannot see.
Where it stands. Pezeshkian addressed the UN General Assembly on 23 September. Fox News aired his interview on 24 September. No report we hold says the talks have produced terms.
What is being argued about
- Whether Mojtaba Khamenei is well enough to lead, and why he has not been seen
- Pezeshkian's line that the US must choose whether to end the war
- Who Iran's own outlets say started the war, and whether they name them
- How Iranian outlets framed the UN speech
