Police say the man they arrested was 'bailed'; Reform's Welsh leader Dan Thomas says 'released without charge'
Dan Thomas has stood down as Reform UK's leader in Wales. Gwent Police say a 45-year-old man was bailed pending further inquiries. Thomas says he was released without charge. None of the three reports we hold says whether both can be true.
What happened. Dan Thomas stood down on Tuesday as Reform UK's leader in Wales. He says he will stay on as the Member of the Senedd for Casnewydd Islwyn. Reform won 34 of 96 seats in May, second only to Plaid Cymru, the Guardian reports.
Two accounts of one weekend.
| Who | What they say | Reports carrying it |
|---|---|---|
| Gwent Police | a 45-year-old man from the Aberbargoed area was arrested on Sunday 13 September and "bailed pending further inquiries" | 3 of 3 |
| Dan Thomas | "reported to the police and was released without charge"; "I have done nothing wrong" | 2 of 3 quote his words |
The police statement does not name the man. All three reports link it to Thomas.
What the allegation is. Both Independent reports quote police saying he was arrested on suspicion of assault and of controlling or coercive behaviour. The Guardian quotes the same statement cut off after "assault".
Who responds. The Independent quotes Welsh Labour leader Ken Skates saying the case will "demonstrate the appalling judgment" of Nigel Farage. The Guardian says Reform gave only "personal reasons" for Thomas missing First Minister's questions, and did not answer repeated questions. The Independent reports Plaid Cymru saying Reform member Sarah Cooper-Lesadd has joined it.
What is not settled. - Whether "bailed" and "released without charge" describe the same outcome. No report says. - Whether the second allegation still stands. The Guardian leaves it out. - Who leads Reform's Senedd group next.
What this is about. The man who led Reform UK's new group in the Welsh parliament has stood down after a police arrest, four months after his party's best-ever result in Wales.
How it got here. - 1999: Wales got its own parliament, now called the Senedd. It makes laws on health, schools, housing and transport. Labour led every Welsh government from 1999 onwards. - 2024: A new law enlarged the Senedd to 96 members. It also changed the voting system. Voters now choose party lists in 16 six-member constituencies, so seats follow each party's share of the vote more closely. - Reform UK began in 2019 as the Brexit Party and took its current name in 2021. Nigel Farage has led it since 2024. - February 2026: Farage named Dan Thomas, a former Conservative councillor, as Reform's leader in Wales, the Guardian reports. - May 2026: At the first election under the new system, Reform won 34 of 96 seats, second only to Plaid Cymru, the Guardian reports. Thomas became the Member of the Senedd for Casnewydd Islwyn.
Who is involved. - Gwent Police cover south-east Wales, including Aberbargoed and Newport. Policing and criminal justice in Wales are still run from Westminster, not by the Senedd. - Plaid Cymru is the Welsh nationalist party and the largest group in the Senedd. - Welsh Labour governed Wales for a quarter of a century before May.
Two terms a reader needs. - Controlling or coercive behaviour has been a crime in England and Wales since 2015. It covers a pattern of abuse by a partner or family member, not a single act. - Bailed pending further inquiries means police have released someone without charging them yet. The investigation carries on, and a charge can still follow. The reports we hold do not say which stage this case has reached.
What is at stake. Reform's 34 members are its first large group in any UK parliament. How it handles its Welsh leader's arrest will test whether it can hold that group together. One of its members has already joined Plaid Cymru.
Where it stands. Thomas stays in the Senedd. Nobody has been charged. The reports we hold do not say who will lead Reform's group next.
What is being argued about
- Police say the man they arrested was bailed; Thomas says he was released without charge
- Two of three reports name controlling or coercive behaviour; one cuts the police statement after 'assault'
- Welsh Labour's leader blames Nigel Farage's judgement; Reform gave 'personal reasons' and little else
- A Reform member of the Senedd joins Plaid Cymru, in one report
