'Preparing a terrorist act' or a 'major incident': five arrests by RAF Fairford, and only NOS and Shargh name the Iran war
Police arrested five men overnight near a British base that hosts US bombers. Four of eight headlines we hold carry the police's terrorism wording, and two call it an 'incident'. None of the reports we hold names the men, a motive or a target.
What police say. Five men were arrested near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act, Reuters reports via Al-Monitor. Reuters and Libération add suspected offences under the Explosives Act. Counter-terrorism officers lead the inquiry.
How it started. A resident saw three white vans and a group of hooded men at about 1am. She called 999, she told the Press Association, quoted by the Guardian. NOS says 85 homes in Whelford were evacuated inside a 400-metre cordon.
Where the accounts split.
| Outlet | What it calls it | How it describes the base |
|---|---|---|
| The Independent | suspicion of preparing a terrorist act | used by US |
| Al-Monitor (Reuters) | terrorism suspicion, Explosives Act | used by the US Air Force |
| France 24 | 'major incident' | used by US |
| Libération | 'major incident', Explosives Act | used by the US Air Force |
| NOS | preparing a terrorist attack | bombers 'active in the war against Iran' |
| Shargh | no arrests in the text we hold | bombers 'used against Iran'; security at 'Delta' |
One claim, one source. President Trump said the suspects had been watched for a long time, NOS reports. NOS adds that British police have said nothing about it.
What is not settled. - Whether the base was the target. NOS says police are considering it but have not said so. - Who the men are. No report we hold names them. - Any motive or backer. NOS raises a possible link to groups tied to Iran and says it is unconfirmed. - Why security was raised. Shargh cites 'threats' without naming a source.
What this is about. Five men were arrested beside a British air base from which US bombers fly missions in a war against Iran.
How it got here. Iran and Israel have been enemies since Iran's 1979 revolution. Their shadow war turned into open exchanges of fire after the Gaza war that followed the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023. They struck each other directly in April and October 2024, then fought a twelve-day war in June 2025 in which the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites. NOS describes the current conflict as a war by the United States and Israel against Iran. After it began, Britain let US forces use RAF Fairford to strike Iranian missile bases and run defensive operations, NOS reports, with B-1 and B-52 bombers. NOS says the base has been used this way since March. In July, NOS reports, Iran's Revolutionary Guards said any base used for bombing flights is a legitimate target.
The actors. - Britain owns and polices the base. RAF Fairford is a Royal Air Force station in Gloucestershire that has long hosted US bombers. - The United States flies the bombers from it. - Iran is the country being struck. Its Revolutionary Guards have named such bases as targets. - Counter-terrorism police lead the inquiry. Under British law, preparing a terrorist act is itself an offence, so a charge can come before any attack.
What is at stake. If the men meant to attack the base, the war has reached the soil of a country that is not formally fighting it. That would test how well Britain protects bases it lends to an ally. If there is no link to the war, this is a domestic terrorism case beside a sensitive site.
Where it stands. The five are held and being questioned. Bomb-disposal teams are examining three vans. Residents of Whelford have not been allowed home, NOS reports. Police have not named the men or said what they planned.
What is being argued about
- Whether to call it a terrorism case or an 'incident'
- Whether the base's role in the Iran war belongs in the story
- A resident's 999 call against Trump's claim of long surveillance
- What police have and have not said about a target
