Qatar says US–Iran talks made 'progress'; an unnamed Iranian official says Hormuz stays shut until 'all' Iran's conditions are met
We hold four reports from Friday. Qatar's prime minister spoke on the record and said Thursday's indirect talks moved forward. An Iranian official who would not be named said the strait stays closed. Reuters said crude fell more than 2%. CNBC said Saudi exports are at their highest since the war began.
The split. The reports disagree on whether a way out of the US–Iran war is close.
| Report | What it leads with | Who says it |
|---|---|---|
| An-Nahar | Thursday's indirect talks "made progress" | Qatar's prime minister, named, speaking to CNN |
| The Jerusalem Post | The strait stays closed until the US meets "all of Iran's conditions" | One Iranian official, not named |
| Reuters | Crude fell more than 2% as both sides look for a way out | Reuters. We hold only its headline |
| CNBC | Saudi crude exports are at their highest since the war began | CNBC. We hold only its opening line |
Named hope, unnamed refusal. The claim of progress comes with a name. The refusal does not. An-Nahar says the unnamed official spoke to Reuters. So both reports that carry him rest on one account.
What Iran has offered. An-Nahar says Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, set out the terms. Fighting would end on all fronts, including Lebanon. The US would lift its blockade of Iranian ports. Frozen funds would be released and Iran's oil exports freed from sanctions. All of it would happen within 7 days. In return, Tehran would reopen the strait.
What is not settled. - No report gives an oil price level or a benchmark. We cannot say which crude fell, or from what price. - No report says how the US has answered Iran's proposal. - CNBC gives no export volume and no count of the attacks on Saudi infrastructure. - No report links the price fall to fuel prices or household bills.
What this is about. The United States and Iran are at war, and Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow sea passage out of the Gulf. Talks are under way to end both.
How it got here. Iran and Israel have been enemies since Iran's 1979 revolution. Israel, the United States and other Western governments have long accused Iran of seeking nuclear weapons. Iran denies it. Tension rose after the war in Gaza that followed the attacks of 7 October 2023. In June 2025 Israel and the United States struck Iran's nuclear sites. An-Nahar says the UN's nuclear watchdog estimated that Iran then held 440.9 kg of uranium enriched to 60%, and that it is unclear how much is left. The reports we hold do not say when the current war began.
The strait. Hormuz lies between Iran and Oman. It is the only way out to open sea for ships leaving Gulf ports in Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE and Saudi Arabia's Gulf coast. Closing it is Iran's main lever. Washington's is its blockade of Iranian ports.
Who is involved. - Iran wants the blockade and sanctions lifted and its frozen funds released. - The United States wants ships to pass freely and wants Iran to give up uranium enrichment. - Qatar is carrying messages between the two sides. It is a Gulf exporter, and its own shipments go through the strait. - Saudi Arabia is the largest Gulf oil exporter. CNBC says its infrastructure is under attack from Iran-backed militants in Yemen and Iraq.
What is at stake. If the strait reopens, Gulf oil and gas can move by sea again. If it stays shut, supply, shipping costs and Gulf export revenues depend on the talks.
Where it stands. Iran has made a proposal and is waiting for a US reply. An-Nahar says Iran's president hopes for a deal before the US midterm elections on 3 November.
