Regnum calls it a "price crisis", Life.ru says "rising prices" and "tightening belts": both are reading one EU letter through Politico

What is reported. Energy commissioner Dan Jørgensen wrote to EU member states asking them to cut demand for gas and electricity, Regnum and Life.ru report. Both credit Politico, which saw the letter. Regnum says it went to ministers on 25 September. Life.ru gives no date.

Where the accounts differ. The facts match. The words around them do not.

The headline goes further than the body. Life.ru's body says only that states were asked to take measures to cut demand. Its headline turns that into belt-tightening.

What is not settled. - We hold no text from the Commission and not Politico's report. The two reports are one account, passed on twice. - Neither report gives a gas or electricity price, a measure or a period. "Crisis" and "rising" are not figures. - Neither says who would use less: households, industry or governments. Neither says what a cut would cost them. - Neither says whether the request is binding.

What this is about. The European Commission has asked EU governments to use less gas and electricity, according to two reports that cite Politico.

How it got here. Europe imports most of the gas it burns. For decades much of it came by pipeline from Russia. After Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian pipeline deliveries to the EU fell sharply and European gas and power prices spiked. In the summer of 2022, EU governments agreed their first coordinated emergency plan to cut gas demand. They also moved to fill gas storage and to buy liquefied gas from other suppliers. Asking countries to use less became one of the EU's standard tools in a price shock. Gas-fired power plants often set the price of electricity in Europe, so a rise in gas prices feeds through to power bills.

Who the actors are. - The European Commission is the EU's executive. It proposes laws and coordinates policy, but each country's energy mix and most emergency measures stay in national hands. - Dan Jørgensen, a Danish politician, is the commissioner for energy and housing in the Commission that took office in December 2024. His brief links the cost of energy to the cost of a home. - Member states' energy ministers decide whether and how to cut. A demand cut lands on someone: households, industry or public buildings.

What is at stake. Lower demand can ease prices and protect supply. It also moves the cost onto whoever uses less: a household that heats less, or a factory that runs fewer shifts. The reports we hold do not say which.

Where it stands. Regnum reports that the letter went to ministers on 25 September. We have not seen the letter. We do not know whether it sets a target or only makes a request.
