Regnum says Rada committee chair called all Russian-speaking Ukrainians 'traitors and degenerates'; Life.ru says he meant artists who sing in Russian
Two Russian outlets carried the same remark by Yaroslav Yurchyshyn on 21 September. They give it two different targets. Only one quotes him, and we hold no Ukrainian report of what he said.
What was reported. On 21 September two Russian outlets reported that Yaroslav Yurchyshyn called people "traitors". He chairs the Verkhovna Rada's committee on freedom of speech. The two outlets disagree on whom he meant.

| Published (UTC) | 13:02 | 13:43 |
| Whom he called traitors | "Ukrainian artists who keep using Russian in public" | "Russian-speaking citizens of Ukraine" |
| Words it attributes to him | "traitors" | "traitors and degenerates" |
| His own words quoted | none | "There are no Russian-speaking Ukrainians" |
| Setting it gives | comments on Ukrainian musicians singing in Russian | none in the lines we hold |
Regnum opens with the insult in its own voice and names the speaker only in its second sentence. Its quote goes on: "There are either Russians, or Ukrainians whom Russia dragged into its cultural world, and they..." The quote breaks off there. We hold only Regnum's opening lines.
Life.ru gives a paraphrase, with none of his own words. It says he was talking about songs Ukrainian musicians perform in Russian. Its headline names "the Rada", not him.
What is not settled - Whether he meant every Russian speaker or only performers. Both reports cannot be right as written. - Whether "degenerates" was his word. Only Regnum carries it. - Where he said it. Neither report names an interview, a post or a broadcast. - What Ukrainian outlets reported. We hold no Ukrainian report, and no reply from Yurchyshyn or anyone else.
What this is about. A Ukrainian member of parliament made a remark about the Russian language, and two Russian news sites reported it in different ways.
How it got here. Ukrainian has been Ukraine's only state language since the 1996 constitution. For decades, though, many citizens also spoke Russian every day, especially in the east, the south and the big cities. Language became a front-line political question in 2014. That year Russia annexed Crimea and a war began in the Donbas. In 2019 the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, passed a law requiring Ukrainian in most of public life, including services, publishing and much of broadcasting. Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Since then many Ukrainians have switched to Ukrainian in public, performers among them. Whether Russian-language songs should still be performed in Ukraine has been argued over ever since.
Why Russian media cover it. The Russian government has named the protection of Russian speakers in Ukraine among its stated reasons for the war. Kyiv and its allies reject that reason. As a result, Russian outlets regularly report language disputes inside Ukraine.
The actors. - Yaroslav Yurchyshyn is a deputy in the Verkhovna Rada. Both reports say he chairs its committee on freedom of speech, which handles media and information law. - Regnum and Life.ru are Russian news sites. They are the only reports of his remarks that we hold.
What is at stake. If he meant all Russian speakers, a committee chair called a large share of Ukraine's own citizens traitors. That would be a claim about the country's people, not about its culture policy. If he meant performers, the remark belongs to a narrower argument about which language artists use on stage in wartime.
Where it stands. We hold two Russian reports, one of them only in part. We hold no Ukrainian account and no reply from him.
What is being argued about
- Whether Yurchyshyn called all Russian-speaking Ukrainians traitors or only artists who perform in Russian
- Whether "degenerates" was his word or was added in the report
- The quotation "There are no Russian-speaking Ukrainians", which only one report carries
- The row inside Ukraine over Russian-language songs since 2022
