Reuters says Beijing carried Riyadh's message to Tehran; Shargh says Islamabad did
Four reports say China privately asked Iran to rein in Yemen's Houthis, all resting on the same three unnamed Iranian sources. Two reports in Tehran name Pakistan instead, one of them quoting a minister on the record. No report names both capitals.
The account. Reuters, carried by Al-Monitor, reports that "China has privately asked Tehran to help rein in Yemen's Houthis after an appeal to Beijing by Saudi Arabia," citing "three Iranian sources familiar with the matter." An-Nahar carries the same reporting in Arabic. Ynet and The Jerusalem Post summarise it.
The other capital. Shargh, in Tehran, tells it as a Pakistani story: army chief Asim Munir asked Tehran in a Wednesday phone call to use "its influence" over the Yemeni group, and Pakistan's defence minister says his government passed Saudi Arabia's message on Yemen to Iran.
| Report | Messenger | Sourced to |
|---|---|---|
| Al-Monitor (Reuters) | China | three Iranian sources |
| An-Nahar | China | the same three, who would not say how |
| The Jerusalem Post | China | two Iranian sources: Beijing was "only one of many considerations" |
| Ynet | China, and Oman too | Reuters; for Oman, a network it ties to Hezbollah |
| Shargh, twice | Pakistan | Pakistani officials, then the minister on the record |
One word apart. Ynet writes of "the takeover of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait." Al-Monitor's full text of the same Reuters report says the Houthis made rapid advances along the Red Sea coast and around the strait. An-Nahar says advances too, not control.
Not settled. Whether these are one message or two: no report names both capitals. Whether anything was passed during Abbas Araghchi's visit to China on Wednesday — An-Nahar says its sources would not say. No Chinese, Iranian, Saudi or Houthi official is quoted anywhere we hold.
This is a story about who Saudi Arabia thinks can get Iran to call off an armed group in Yemen.
How it got here. Yemen's Houthi movement, which calls itself Ansarullah, seized the capital Sanaa in 2014. A Saudi-led military coalition intervened in March 2015, and the war that followed has never formally ended; a UN-brokered truce in April 2022 slowed it without settling it. Since the Gaza war that began after the attacks of 7 October 2023, the Houthis have attacked ships in the Red Sea, saying they act in support of Palestinians, and many shipping lines rerouted around Africa. Saudi Arabia and Iran, on opposite sides in Yemen, restored diplomatic relations in March 2023 under an agreement brokered by China — which is why Beijing is a plausible messenger at all. China is the largest buyer of Iranian oil. Pakistan has a long-standing military relationship with Saudi Arabia.
The place in the headline. Bab el-Mandeb is the strait between Yemen and the Horn of Africa. Everything sailing between the Indian Ocean and the Suez Canal passes through it, Saudi oil included.
What is at stake. If Tehran leans on the group and the attacks stop, a long argument about how much control Iran actually has is settled one way. If it leans and nothing happens, it is settled the other. And whichever capital carried Riyadh's request is the one Riyadh now believes can move Iran.
Where it stands. Saudi Arabia warned the UN Security Council on Tuesday that the threat now reaches international shipping, its envoy Abdulaziz Alwasil told the council. Araghchi was in China on Wednesday. Asharq Al-Awsat reports that he and Pakistan's army chief discussed regional developments the same week, as talks between the United States and Iran stall.
What is being argued about
- Whether China or Pakistan carried Saudi Arabia's request to Iran over the Houthis
- What three unnamed Iranian sources will and will not say about how the message was passed
- Houthi advances around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and whether that amounts to control of it
- How much influence over the Houthis Iran is assumed to have, and by whom
