Reuters says thousands of flights snarled, NOS and The Independent say hundreds; The Guardian gives a radio fault, not a cable cut
The US aviation regulator halted flights at airports in the north-east on Monday. Six reports from five outlets disagree on why, on which airports and on how many flights. None quotes a passenger.
What happened. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stopped flights at several north-eastern airports on Monday from about 10am, The Guardian reports. It says radio frequencies at the Philadelphia approach control were affected until the early afternoon.
Three causes. Reuters says the FAA blamed a fibre line cut at a construction site. NOS says construction workers damaged a cable by accident, which broke a backup link, and it attributes that to the FAA. The Independent's headline calls it a "construction mistake" and names no source. The Guardian gives only a "radio equipment problem". Its headline puts a hacking warning beside the halt, but its text does not link the two.
| Outlet | Cause | Airports named | Flights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reuters | fibre line cut at a site, FAA says | "busy East Coast airports" | thousands "snarled" |
| NOS | cable damaged by workers, FAA says | Philadelphia, Newark; JFK, LaGuardia, Boston briefly | hundreds delayed |
| The Independent | "construction mistake" | NYC, Boston, Philadelphia | hundreds delayed |
| The Guardian | radio equipment problem | Newark, Philadelphia, Teterboro | no number |
| Le Figaro | communications failure | JFK, LaGuardia, Boston first | no number |
Not settled. - The cable cut is one account, and it is the FAA's. No report says it was checked. - Whether JFK, LaGuardia and Boston stopped at all. The Guardian does not name them. - What "hundreds" and "thousands" count. No report says whether it means delays, cancellations or diversions, or when it counted. - What it cost passengers. No report asks one.
What this is about. Air traffic control failed at a facility that guides planes into some of the busiest airports in the United States, and flights were held on the ground.
Who runs the skies. The FAA is the federal agency that regulates US civil aviation and employs the controllers who direct aircraft. When controllers cannot safely handle traffic, the FAA can order a ground stop. Planes bound for an airport are then held where they are until the stop is lifted.
Why Philadelphia matters for New York. A big airport's tower does not guide the planes around it on its own. A terminal radar approach control, or Tracon, handles aircraft climbing out of and descending into a whole region. In 2024 the FAA moved control of Newark's approaches to its Philadelphia Tracon. So a fault in Philadelphia can stop flights at Newark, and at the small Teterboro airport nearby, in New Jersey.
How it got here. This is not the first failure there. In spring 2025, controllers handling Newark lost radar and radio contact with aircraft more than once, and the FAA restricted flights at Newark. That set off a national argument over the FAA's ageing equipment, its shortage of controllers and a plan to replace much of the system. NOS notes that earlier this month a fault at the British air traffic service cancelled more than a thousand flights in the UK and Ireland.
The other voice. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is the audit arm of the US Congress. The Guardian reports a GAO finding that the systems guiding US aircraft are open to interference and deception. It also reports that Senator Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, wants swift action. No report we hold says hacking caused Monday's halt.
What is at stake. NOS reports the FAA as saying that a single cable cut broke a backup link. If so, the question is how much spare capacity the system has. Travellers and airlines bear the cost of the answer.
Where it stands. NOS says flights resumed at JFK, LaGuardia and Boston while Newark and Philadelphia stayed restricted.
What is being argued about
- Was it a construction cable cut, a telecoms fault or a radio equipment problem?
- Were JFK, LaGuardia and Boston halted, or only Newark, Philadelphia and Teterboro?
- Hundreds or thousands of flights, and counting what?
- Does a hacking warning belong in a headline about this outage?
