Riyadh says 73 civilians wounded; the parliament in Sanaa condemns "Saudi crimes"
Four reports count the wounded in Saudi Arabia; three name a Saudi ministry or the coalition spokesman as the source, and the fourth names none. Two reports carry Saudi raids inside Yemen, both on the Houthis' account. Neither gives a figure for anyone hurt there.
Who fired. The reports carry four names for the same missiles. The Jerusalem Post writes "Houthi attacks" and quotes the coalition spokesman calling them "this terrorist militia". France 24 writes "the Iran-backed rebels". Shargh's headline makes the attacker Yemen — a state, not an armed group.
Who was hurt.
| Outlet | Wounded | Sourced to |
|---|---|---|
| An-Nahar | 73 civilians, "among them women and children" | the Saudi foreign ministry |
| Asharq Al-Awsat | 73 civilians | stated in the headline |
| The Jerusalem Post | over 70 | Col. Turki al-Malki, coalition spokesman |
| France 24 | dozens | no source given |
Three of the four trace the count to one Saudi official account. No report we hold names a single person hurt.
What burned. Shargh's headline calls it a widespread fire at Aramco's petrochemical plant in Jazan. The Saudi energy ministry, quoted by An-Nahar, says energy sites in the south were targeted and some operations stopped temporarily, and does not state the damage. It announces no production cut and no shipping disruption. Brent rose a dollar, to $98.
Not settled. Whether Saudi Arabia has struck back. LBCI carries the Houthis saying Saudi Arabia is running a fresh series of raids in Taiz; IRNA carries the parliament in Sanaa condemning Saudi attacks and international silence. Both are the Sanaa side of the story. France 24 says only that Riyadh threatened to hit back, and we hold no Saudi confirmation of any strike. No report gives a casualty figure inside Yemen. No Yemeni outlet is among the reports we hold.
What this is about. An armed movement that controls much of northern Yemen has fired missiles and drones deep into Saudi Arabia. The attack reopens a war between the two that had been paused for four years.
How it got here. - 2014. The Houthis, a movement from Yemen's far north that calls itself Ansar Allah, took the capital, Sanaa. The internationally recognised government fled south. - March 2015. Saudi Arabia formed a military coalition of Arab states and went to war to restore that government. The coalition's air campaign and Houthi missile and drone fire into Saudi cities continued for seven years. - April 2022. A UN-brokered truce took hold. In the same month the recognised government handed power to a Presidential Leadership Council, based in Aden. The truce largely held after its formal term ran out. - Late 2023 onward. The Houthis attacked shipping in the Red Sea. They said this was in support of Palestinians in Gaza. - 2026. France 24 says the truce collapsed in July, "months into the Middle East war between the United States and Iran". An-Nahar, citing Reuters, says the Houthis declared a naval blockade against Riyadh that month.
Who is involved, and why. - The Houthis govern Sanaa and the north. They have their own parliament and government there. - Saudi Arabia leads the coalition and shares a long border with Yemen. The targeted cities, Jazan, Najran, Abha and Khamis Mushait, lie in its south, near that border. - Yemen's recognised government is backed by Riyadh. The Jerusalem Post says its forces are pushing against the Houthis on the ground. - Iran backs the Houthis politically and, by most Western and Gulf accounts, with weapons. How far Tehran directs them is disputed. - Aramco is Saudi Arabia's state oil company. It runs the plants that were hit.
What is at stake. A renewed Saudi–Houthi war would restart a conflict the truce had largely frozen. It would also put Saudi oil sites at risk while, An-Nahar reports, traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is already disrupted.
Where it stands. Riyadh says it reserves the right to respond. The Houthis say Saudi raids have already begun. Neither account has been independently confirmed.

What is being argued about
- Who is named as firing: Houthis, Iran-backed rebels, a terrorist militia, or Yemen
- The count of civilians wounded in Saudi Arabia, and whose count it is
- What burned at Jazan, and what the Saudi energy ministry will and will not say about output
- Whether Saudi Arabia has struck back in Taiz
