RTÉ and The Irish Times say a container, TheJournal.ie says a lorry trailer: six people found at Rosslare, man released without charge

A man in his 40s, arrested after six people were found at Rosslare Europort, has been released without charge. Three Irish outlets use two different words for where the six were found. None of them says who the six are.

What happened. RTÉ News and TheJournal.ie report that a man in his 40s has been released without charge. He was arrested after six people were found at Rosslare Europort in Co Wexford. The Irish Times reports the release but gives no age.

Where the six were found: the reports differ.

Outlet Where the six were Man's age File for the DPP
RTÉ News "inside a shipping container" in his 40s not mentioned
The Irish Times "in container"; "container ship incident" not given yes
TheJournal.ie "in lorry trailer" 40s yes, from a Garda spokesperson

Two of three reports say container. One says lorry trailer. None explains the difference, and none says whether both could be true.

What comes next. TheJournal.ie quotes a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána: "a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions." The Irish Times carries the same step. That is one Garda account, reported twice. RTÉ News does not mention a file.

What is not settled.

  • Who the six people are, where they came from and what state they were in. No report says.
  • Whether they were in a container or a lorry trailer, and which ship or route brought them.
  • When they were found and when the man was arrested. No report gives a time.
  • Whether anyone will be charged. That decision belongs to the DPP.

This story is about six people found hidden in freight at an Irish port, and about who decides whether anyone is prosecuted for it.

How it got here. Rosslare Europort is on the south-east coast of Ireland, in Co Wexford. It is one of the State's main ferry ports, with sailings to Wales and to France. The United Kingdom left the European Union in 2020. Since then, more Irish freight has sailed straight to the continent instead of crossing Britain by road, and Rosslare's direct routes to France have grown. Ireland is an EU member but sits outside the Schengen passport-free area. Instead, it shares a Common Travel Area with the UK.

The actors.

  • An Garda Síochána is Ireland's national police service. It can arrest and question a suspect, but must then charge or release them.
  • The Director of Public Prosecutions is an independent office. It decides whether a case goes to court. Gardaí send it a file, and it directs a charge or no charge.
  • The six people are the other party. The reports give their number and nothing else.
  • The arrested man is not named. RTÉ News and TheJournal.ie say he is in his 40s.

What is at stake. Irish law makes it an offence to help someone enter the State unlawfully. If the DPP directs a charge, the man goes before a court. If it does not, he faces no prosecution. Release without charge is not a finding either way. What happens to the six depends on who they are and what they are seeking, and no report says.

Where it stands. On 19 September 2026, the man had been released. According to a Garda spokesperson quoted by TheJournal.ie, a file was to be prepared for the DPP. Nothing has been reported on the six.

What is being argued about

  • Whether the six were found in a shipping container or a lorry trailer
  • The release without charge of a man in his 40s
  • A Garda file for the Director of Public Prosecutions
  • What the reports leave out about the six people

The Irish Times alone puts a ship in the story, calling it a "container ship incident". It gives no age for the man.
A man who was arrested in connection with the discovery of six people in a container at Rosslare Europort has been released without charge. A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions, An Garda Síochána said in a statement. The man, in his 40s, was arrested after five men and a juvenile were found in a container on the MS Lismore, which docked at Rosslare Europort on Thursday morning. The six, understood to be Algerian, were taken to Waterford General Hospital with injuries which were not life threatening. READ MORE ‘It is a romantic notion’: Jack McCaffrey aiming for fairy

TheJournal.ie alone says "lorry trailer", and it credits the DPP file to a Garda spokesperson.
An account is an optional way to support the work we do. Find out more. A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. At around 5am on Thursday, gardaí were alerted to the presence of six people in the trailer of a lorry that had docked at the port. All six, five adult men and one juvenile male, were taken to hospital for medical assessment. Two were refused permission to land, while the juvenile is said to be receiving appropriate supports.
