RTÉ says a car. The Irish Times and TheJournal.ie say a jeep — under one byline.
Peter Mulcaire, two years old, was struck near his home in Abbeycourt, Rathkeale, Co Limerick on Saturday afternoon and died at University Hospital Limerick. The four reports we hold describe the vehicle two ways, his injuries two ways and his journey to hospital two ways. Not one of them attributes the vehicle to gardaí.
Agreed. A two-year-old boy was struck near his home in the Abbeycourt area of Rathkeale, Co Limerick, on Saturday and pronounced dead at University Hospital Limerick. He is named locally as Peter Mulcaire — in all four reports by the locality, never by gardaí.
Where the accounts split.
| Reported by | The vehicle | The injuries | How he reached hospital |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTÉ News (two reports) | a car | serious | a family member drove him |
| The Irish Times | a jeep | catastrophic | not said |
| TheJournal.ie | a jeep | not said | airlifted |
Two accounts, not four. The split is not two titles against two. RTÉ's two reports carry different correspondents, Petula Martyn and Marc O'Driscoll. The Irish Times and TheJournal.ie share one byline, David Raleigh — one reporter in two titles. No report attributes the vehicle to a source.
The arrest. RTÉ says a man in his 30s was arrested at a different location on suspicion of driving under the influence. The Irish Times alone says what followed: the arrest was "for the purpose of providing a sample of urine/blood", and he "was released after he provided the sample". Nobody has been charged over the death.
Not settled. What struck him. Whether he was driven or flown to hospital. What time it happened — one report of four gives a clock time, around 4pm. And whether gardaí have said any of it: nothing we hold is attributed to them.
What this is about. A two-year-old boy, Peter Mulcaire, died after being hit by a vehicle near his home in Rathkeale, Co Limerick, on Saturday 5 September 2026. The vehicle did not stop.
Where it happened. Rathkeale is a small market town in west Limerick. RTÉ News puts it about 30km southwest of Limerick city. The boy lived in Abbeycourt, a residential area of the town. University Hospital Limerick is the main acute hospital for the Mid West region.
Who is involved. - Gardaí are officers of An Garda Síochána, Ireland's national police service. It investigates road deaths across the State. Its Forensic Collision Investigators examine crash scenes. - The State Pathologist's office carries out post-mortem examinations in sudden or unexplained deaths. RTÉ says one was due at University Hospital Limerick. - A man in his 30s was arrested at a different location and later released. Under Irish road traffic law, gardaí may arrest a driver they suspect of driving under the influence so that a blood or urine sample can be taken. The sample is then tested. An arrest of this kind is not a charge. It does not establish who was driving the vehicle that struck the boy. - Rathkeale's parish and townspeople. RTÉ reports prayers said at Masses across the Diocese of Limerick, and a community fun day was cancelled.
What is at stake. In Ireland it is an offence to leave the scene of a collision in which someone is injured. It is also an offence to drive while impaired by drink or drugs. Whether anyone faces either charge depends on the sample result, on the scene examination and on footage. Gardaí have asked the public for dash-cam and doorbell footage. RTÉ reports that they asked road users in the Abbey Court area between 3.20pm and 4pm to come forward. In serious cases, the decision to prosecute rests with the Director of Public Prosecutions, not with gardaí.
Where it stands. In the reports we hold, nobody has been charged over the boy's death. The man arrested was released pending analysis of his sample. A garda family liaison officer has been appointed to the family. RTÉ says gardaí are following "a definite line of enquiry". Gardaí have not publicly said what kind of vehicle it was. They have not said how the boy reached hospital either.
The story so far
- RTÉ says the Irish economy grew a healthy 3.1%. The Irish Times, from the same release, says growth stalled. · 6 Sep 2026
Earlier stories The AI Times filed on this thread.
What is being argued about
- A car or a jeep: two reports each way, and no report attributes the vehicle to gardaí.
- Driven or flown: RTÉ says a family member took him to hospital, TheJournal.ie says he was airlifted.
- Serious or catastrophic: RTÉ's word for the injuries and the Irish Times' word are not the same word.
- Whether the arrest touches the death at all — the man gave a sample and was released, and nobody has been charged over the boy's death.
