RTÉ says 'occupied Palestinian territories', TheJournal.ie says 'Palestine' as McEntee tells EU its credibility 'is gone'

Ireland's foreign minister said in New York that the EU is 'failing' on Israel. Three Irish reports carry her words. They name the place two ways, and one calls the settlements illegal in its own voice.

Three reports, two names for the place. Ireland's foreign minister, Helen McEntee, said in New York on Monday that the EU's credibility "is gone" on Israel. Three reports carry it: RTÉ News, TheJournal.ie and TheJournal.ie's evening round-up. They do not name the place the same way.

Report The place, in its own words What is criticised
RTÉ News "the occupied Palestinian territories" "the actions of the Israeli government"
TheJournal.ie "Palestine" "illegal Israeli settlements"
TheJournal.ie, evening round-up "Palestine" "Israel's actions"

Who calls it illegal. TheJournal.ie's headline calls the settlements illegal in its own voice. RTÉ News gives the legal charge to her: "Ireland's view is clear - that Israel is breaching international law."

What she asked for. RTÉ News reports that her focus is EU-wide sanctions on "Israeli goods and services". TheJournal.ie says she hopes for "further EU sanctions imposed against Israel". RTÉ's headline softens her words to "questions". Its lead quote is "We are failing".

What is not settled. - When the Irish ban took effect. Only RTÉ News carries it, and only as her own statement. - Any reply. None of the three reports quotes the Israeli government or the EU. - What TheJournal.ie's full article says. We hold only its headline and one line.

What this is about. Ireland is pressing the European Union to act together against Israel over its conduct in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. Its foreign minister says the EU is failing.

How it got here. Israel has occupied the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza since the 1967 war. Most states and the UN hold that the settlements Israel has built in the West Bank are illegal under international law. Israel disputes this. After Hamas led attacks on Israel on 7 October 2023, Israel went to war in Gaza. In May 2024 Ireland recognised the State of Palestine, together with Spain and Norway. In July 2024 the International Court of Justice gave an advisory opinion that Israel's continued presence in the occupied territories is unlawful. Ireland then passed a law to ban imports of goods from the settlements. RTÉ News reports the minister saying that law took effect this week.

Who is involved. - Ireland: a small EU member with a long record of backing a Palestinian state. - The EU: it sets trade policy for all 27 members and is Israel's largest trading partner. A ban by one member covers only that member's market. Foreign-policy sanctions need all 27 governments to agree. - Israel's government: the target of the measures. - The UN General Assembly: world leaders meet there in New York each September. The minister spoke there before this week's session.

What is at stake. If the EU acts together, Israel's trade with its biggest partner is restricted. If it does not, measures stay national. The minister argues that national measures alone will not change the Israeli government's decisions.

Where it stands. None of the reports we hold says an EU-wide trade measure has been agreed or proposed. The minister spoke before this week's General Assembly debate opens.

What is being argued about

  • Whether the EU has lost credibility over its response to Israel
  • EU-wide sanctions on Israeli goods and services
  • Ireland's ban on goods from the settlements
  • What to call the place: 'Palestine' or 'the occupied Palestinian territories'

'We are failing' - McEntee questions EU's Israel response Updated / Monday, 21 Sep 2026 17:52 Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee has said that the credibility of the European Union "is gone" regarding its response to the actions of the Israeli government in the occupied Palestinian territories. Speaking in New York ahead of the UN General Assembly this week, Ms McEntee said the EU needs to be responding collectively to have an impact. "We need to act collectively. We are failing here, to be quite honest. "Our credibility is gone on this issue and if we don't act collectively then the d

An account is an optional way to support the work we do. Find out more. McEntee told reporters that the EU’s “credibility is gone on the issue” but that she is beginning to see a shift among EU member states and that she is hopeful that there will be progress on collective EU sanctions against Israel. Last week, Ireland’s long-debated occupied territories bill entered into law, banning the importation of goods (but not services) originating in Israeli settlements into Ireland.
