RTÉ says the FAI denied "an Israeli journalist", TheJournal.ie says "Israeli accusations", the Guardian says a darkening "mood"

Ireland's briefing on the eve of its second Nations League match against Israel ended early on 3 October. Four outlets agree on that. They disagree on what caused it: one journalist, several journalists, "clashes" or a mood. None of the reports we hold says what the racism claim was.

Anglosphere Ireland Israel

What four outlets agree on. Ireland's press conference on 3 October ended early. It was held on the eve of the second Nations League match against Israel, which is being played in Serbia. The Guardian, The Independent, RTÉ News and TheJournal.ie all report this.

Where they differ. They differ on what caused it and on who made the claim.

Outlet Its words Who raised it Gaza named?
RTÉ News "ended abruptly", FAI "reject racism claims" "an Israeli journalist" No
TheJournal.ie "Chaotic scenes… after Israeli accusations" "Israeli", with no person named No
The Independent "cut short after clashes" not said No
The Guardian "Ireland cut short news conference as mood darkens" questions from "Israeli journalists" Yes

Who denied it. RTÉ says the FAI "strongly" denied the claims. The Guardian says they were "dismissed as 'completely untrue'" but does not say by whom.

The manager. RTÉ says Heimir Hallgrimsson praised the squad's "togetherness". The Guardian says he called for "cool heads". TheJournal.ie says he "retains composure".

What is not settled - What the claim was. None of the reports we hold quotes it. - Who made it. RTÉ says one journalist. The Guardian says he was taking questions from several. - Who ended the briefing. Only The Guardian names Ireland. - The first match. Only The Guardian reports it: Ireland won 3-0 in Hungary.

This story is about a football match that has become part of Ireland's argument about Israel and the war in Gaza.

How it got here. On 7 October 2023, Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel. Israel answered with a war in Gaza that is still going on. Ireland's government has been an outspoken critic of how Israel has fought that war. In May 2024 Ireland recognised the State of Palestine, on the same day as Spain and Norway. Israel recalled its ambassador from Dublin. In December 2024 it announced that it would close its embassy there.

Since the war began, UEFA, which runs European football, has not let Israel play home matches in Israel. Its games are moved to grounds in other countries. That is why these two matches were in Hungary and Serbia. RTÉ calls the Serbia match Ireland's "home" game.

The Nations League is UEFA's competition between national teams, and the draw put Ireland and Israel in the same group. The Guardian reports that the Irish squad voted to play the matches despite unease in the team over Gaza. The Independent reports protests in Ireland over the decision.

The actors. The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) runs the national team and held the briefing. Heimir Hallgrímsson, who is from Iceland, is Ireland's manager. Israeli journalists were there to cover their own team.

What is at stake. The FAI has to fulfil a fixture that splits its own public, without the team becoming a mouthpiece for Irish foreign policy. For Israel, the question is how its team is treated in a country whose government is one of its sharpest critics in Europe. A racism allegation made at an official briefing raises the cost for both sides.

Where it stands. The claim has been made and denied. The match is still to come. None of the reports we hold sets out what the claim said.

What is being argued about

  • Whether the racism claim came from one Israeli journalist or several
  • Who ended the briefing: Ireland, the FAI, or no one named
  • Why only one outlet names the war in Gaza as the background
  • Protests in Ireland over the decision to play Israel

The only report to name the war in Gaza and the squad's vote to play. It is also the only one with the 3-0 result in Hungary and the manager's call for "cool heads".
The Republic of Ireland’s press conference on the eve of their second Nations League match against Israel in Serbia was cut short as the head coach, Heimir Hallgrimsson, fielded questions from Israeli journalists. Ireland beat Israel 3-0 in Hungary in their first match on Tuesday following a turbulent buildup in which the Irish squad voted to fulfil the fixture despite unease among the team over the war in Gaza.
