RTÉ says two dead and four missing in Athens; The Guardian and The Independent say six dead, Americans and a Briton among them
An explosion brought down a two-storey block in the Plaka district below the Acropolis. The death toll rose from two to six through Saturday. The nationalities of the dead come from police lists and unnamed sources. No one has been named.
What happened. A two-storey apartment block at 15 Lysikratous, in Athens's Plaka district, collapsed after an explosion at 7.30am on Friday, The Guardian reports. At least three people were injured.
The count moved. RTÉ News reported first on Saturday and gave two dead and four missing. The Independent and The Guardian reported later that day and gave six dead. RTÉ's dead and missing also add up to six.

Who the dead are. The fire service found three women and three men and did not identify them, The Guardian reports. Police had listed four Americans among the missing: two brothers and their wives, staying in a short-term rental. The Guardian says it "was told" that a Briton and his Greek wife, aged 77 and 78, were killed. None of the three reports names anyone.
What is not settled. - The cause. The Guardian calls a gas leak speculation. Officials said many "cogent theories" were in play. - Who died. No authority has named the dead in any report we hold. - The Independent's account. We could read only its headline, not the article itself.
This story is about a building that exploded and collapsed in the oldest tourist quarter of Athens, the Greek capital. It killed people who lived there and people on holiday.
The place. Plaka lies at the foot of the Acropolis, the citadel whose temples date from the fifth century BC. It is a district of alleys, neoclassical houses and small apartment blocks. The Guardian reports that thousands of visitors come each day, many staying overnight in hotels and short-term rentals.
How it got here. Tourism is one of Greece's largest industries. It became more important as the country recovered from the debt crisis that began in 2009 and needed three international bailouts. Over the past decade, short-term rentals booked through online platforms spread across central Athens, and residents blame them for rising rents. The Guardian reports that Greece's centre-right government has tried to ban short-term rentals in Plaka as part of its response to a housing crisis, cutting back permits and tightening rules.
The actors. - The fire service ran the search and recovered the bodies. - The police kept the list of the missing. - Athens city hall: the mayor, Haris Doukas, and the deputy mayor, Paris Charlaftis, who says the focus now is the cause. - Plaka's residents' committee, led by the architect Giorgos Zafeiriou, which asks who inspects short-term lets. - British and Irish outlets are covering it because a British resident is reported among the dead. The United States is in it because four of the missing were American visitors.
What is at stake. Officials list a leak from the first-floor short-term rental as one of several theories. If that one holds, the fight over who regulates such rentals sharpens. If it does not, attention turns to the building itself.
Where it stands. The bodies are at the morgue for postmortems. Civil protection crews have been ordered to stay on site until the cause is found.
What is being argued about
- How many died: two dead and four missing, or six dead
- Whether the dead include four Americans and a Briton, and on whose word
- What caused the explosion, with a gas leak raised only as speculation
- Who inspects short-term rentals in Plaka
