Saar says Israel plans "to expel or deport" nobody from Gaza; the Jerusalem Post report we hold does not carry the remark
Israel opened its first embassy in Slovenia on Wednesday. Two Lebanese reports lead on what the foreign minister said about Gaza while he was there; the Israeli report we hold leads on relations thawing and ends on the protests.
The embassy. Israel opened its first embassy in Slovenia on 9 September, with Foreign Minister Gideon Saar there. The Jerusalem Post and An-Nahar both carry the opening. No report we hold disputes it.
The remark. In Ljubljana, Saar said Israel does not plan "to expel or deport" anyone from Gaza — and added that if someone wants to emigrate "of his own will", to a country willing to receive him, Israel would not object. Two of the four reports we hold carry it. Two do not.
| Report | What it leads with | Saar on Gaza |
|---|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | the embassy, "as relations thaw"; the protests are its last line | not carried |
| An-Nahar, on the embassy | Janez Jansa reversing a government that had called the Gaza offensive "genocide" | not carried |
| An-Nahar, on Saar | the denial | the denial, plus the condition attached to it |
| LBCI | the denial | headline alone, no body |
What is not settled. Whether the denial holds: no report we hold tests it against anything happening in Gaza, and none quotes a Palestinian. An-Nahar alone lists Jansa's three reversals since May — the arms embargo, the entry ban on Benjamin Netanyahu and two ministers, the ban on settlement goods — and no second report carries any of them. No Palestinian outlet appears among the four reports. No Slovenian protester is quoted either.
What this is about. Israel's foreign minister was asked whether Israel plans to move Palestinians out of Gaza. He was asked in Slovenia, an EU country that broke sharply with Israel over the war and has now swung back.
How it got here
- The war. On 7 October 2023, Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel, killing people and taking hostages. Israel answered with an air and ground offensive on Gaza. A US-brokered ceasefire took effect in October 2025.
- The fear of expulsion. Most people in Gaza are descendants of refugees who fled or were driven from their homes in the 1948 war around Israel's founding. So any talk of Gazans leaving touches that history. In February 2025, US President Donald Trump proposed moving Gaza's population elsewhere. Palestinian leaders and Arab governments rejected the plan as forced displacement. An-Nahar says the international argument over resettling Gazans abroad is still going on.
- The genocide case. In December 2023, South Africa accused Israel of genocide in Gaza at the International Court of Justice, the UN's top court. Israel denies the charge. An-Nahar notes that the case is still open.
- Slovenia's turn. Under the centre-left prime minister Robert Golob, Slovenia recognised the State of Palestine in June 2024. An-Nahar reports that his government called the offensive genocide, and that his successor has since lifted an arms embargo, entry bans and a ban on settlement goods.
Who is involved
- Gideon Saar, Israel's foreign minister. He was in Slovenia to open the embassy.
- Janez Jansa, a nationalist who returned as prime minister at the end of May. An-Nahar says he has held the post three times before.
- Golob's Freedom Movement. An-Nahar reports that the party calls Jansa's reversals a trade for Israeli help in the March election. Jansa denies commissioning the operation it points to.
- The EU. An-Nahar reports that Jansa vetoed a joint EU statement condemning settlement expansion in the West Bank.
What is at stake. For people in Gaza, the question is whether they can stay. Saar says anyone who leaves "of his own will" would not be stopped. Whether leaving a war zone can be a free choice is the question that remains open. For Europe, a single government can now block the EU from speaking on Israel with one voice.
Where it stands. The embassy is open. The Jerusalem Post reports that protests were planned against it. None of the reports we hold checks the denial against what is happening in Gaza.
What is being argued about
- Israel's first embassy in Slovenia, opened 9 September with Gideon Saar present
- Saar's statement that Israel plans to expel or deport nobody from Gaza, and the condition he attached about leaving voluntarily
- Janez Jansa's reversals since May: the arms embargo, the entry ban on Netanyahu and two ministers, the ban on settlement goods
- The opposition's "trade-off" accusation over an Israeli private intelligence firm and the March election, and Jansa's partial denial
