Same Reuters report, two ledes: Al-Monitor's 'US blockade' against the Jerusalem Post's Iranian 'stranglehold' on Hormuz
Iran has been at war with the United States for seven months, and Iranians are struggling to pay for food, medicine and rent. Three reports agree on the hardship. They split on who is doing the squeezing.
The hardship is not in dispute. All three reports we hold say ordinary Iranians are struggling. Al-Monitor runs a Reuters report on people "unable to afford basic necessities or rent". Al Jazeera English reports shortages of food and medicine.
Who is squeezing them is in dispute. Al-Monitor and the Jerusalem Post run the same Reuters report under almost the same headline. The passage each one puts first blames a different party.
| Outlet | Who is named as acting | Their words |
|---|---|---|
| Al-Monitor (Reuters) | the United States | "a US blockade cuts the state's financial lifeline - oil exports" |
| Jerusalem Post (Reuters) | Iran | "it tightens its own stranglehold on Gulf energy exports through the Strait of Hormuz" |
| Al Jazeera English | no one | "sanctions and blockade strain food and medicine supply chains" |
Who speaks. Al-Monitor's version opens with people: an engineer priced out of Tehran, a woman who quit smoking because of the cost, and carers who cannot buy medicine. The Jerusalem Post's version asks how far the strain "may push Iran towards diplomatic compromise".
Stockpiling. Only Al Jazeera English says Iranians are stocking up. It links this to fears of new US fighting.
What is not settled - Only one report makes the Hormuz claim, so we cannot check it against the others. - No report gives a price, a shortage figure or a count of the people affected. - We hold no report from an Iranian outlet on the hardship. That is a gap in what we could read, not a silence in Iran.
What this is about. Ordinary Iranians are paying for a war between their government and the United States, and news outlets disagree on who is squeezing them.
How it got here. Iran's nuclear programme has set it against the United States and Israel for two decades. In 2015 Iran signed a deal with world powers, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. It limited the programme in return for relief from sanctions. In 2018 the United States left the deal under President Donald Trump and brought back sanctions, including on Iran's oil. The war in Gaza followed the attacks of 7 October 2023. After it began, Iran and Israel moved from a hidden conflict to striking each other directly. In June 2025 Israel and Iran fought a twelve-day war, and the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites. The reports we hold say the current war with the United States is seven months old.
The actors. Iran's government earns much of its foreign income from oil. The reports say the United States is blockading those exports and cutting that income. Iran sits on the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow sea lane between Iran and Oman. Much of the Gulf's oil and gas passes through it on the way to the rest of the world. Whoever can close the strait can push up energy prices far beyond the region.
What is at stake. For Iranians, it is rent, medicine and food. For Washington and Tehran, it is which side's pressure forces the other to negotiate first. For everyone else, it is the price of oil and gas.
Where it stands. Al Jazeera English's headline speaks of fears of new US fighting, which suggests the fighting has paused. We hold no report on the terms of any pause or on any talks.
What is being argued about
- Who the reports blame for Iran's hardship: the US, Iran, or no one
- Rent, medicine and basic goods out of reach for ordinary Iranians
- Whether economic strain pushes Iran towards a diplomatic compromise
- Stocking up on food and medicine amid fears the fighting with the US resumes
