Shargh says 'the Jolani regime' met Hezbollah in Turkey, Al-Modon says 'the Syrian government' — and all three reports rest on unnamed sources
Three outlets ran the same Reuters account of talks between Syria and Hezbollah in Turkey last month. They disagree on what to call the government in Damascus and on what the talks were for. In the reports we hold, neither side confirms the talks took place.
What is reported. Al-Modon and Shargh, both citing Reuters, say people from Syria's government and from Hezbollah met in Turkey last month. Al-Modon says Reuters had six informed sources. None of them is named.
The one new detail. Only The Jerusalem Post quotes anyone: a Syrian official who is not named. The official says both sides agreed they held no hostility towards each other. The same official says Syria promised Hezbollah it would not send forces into Lebanon to disarm the group.
Three names for Damascus.
| Outlet | Calls the Syrian side | Calls the meeting | Source given |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | Syria | "secret security talks", "reportedly to ease border tensions" | one Syrian official, not named |
| Al-Modon | "the Syrian government" | talks "to calm the tension" | six sources speaking to Reuters, not named |
| Shargh | "the Jolani regime" | a meeting | "some sources" speaking to Reuters |
Who speaks. One report quotes a Syrian official. None of the three quotes anyone from Hezbollah.
What is not settled. - In the reports we hold, neither Damascus nor Hezbollah confirms the meeting. - No report says who attended or where in Turkey they met. - The promise not to disarm Hezbollah rests on one unnamed official in one report. - We hold only the opening line of Al-Modon's report.
What this is about. Syria's new rulers and Hezbollah, the Lebanese armed movement, fought on opposite sides of Syria's war. Reports now say the two have held talks.
How it got here. Syria's civil war began in 2011. Hezbollah is a Shia party and militia in Lebanon, backed by Iran. From about 2013 it sent fighters to defend President Bashar al-Assad. Syria was also its land route to Iran. In December 2024 an offensive led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an Islamist group based in Idlib in the north-west, brought Assad down. The group's leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, became Syria's president. For years he fought under the war name Abu Mohammad al-Jolani. Shargh, an Iranian paper, uses that name in its report.
Hezbollah also fought Israel from October 2023, after the Hamas-led attack of 7 October. A ceasefire began in Lebanon in November 2024. Since then Lebanon's government has said only the state should hold weapons. That puts Hezbollah's arsenal at the centre of Lebanese politics. The border between Syria and Lebanon has long been easy to cross and used for smuggling. There has been fighting along it since Assad fell.
Who is involved. The government in Damascus wants a quiet border and support from abroad. Hezbollah has lost its ally in Damascus and its supply route. Turkey, where the talks reportedly took place, is the new Syrian government's closest foreign backer. Iran backed both Assad and Hezbollah.
What is at stake. If Damascus and Hezbollah can talk, fighting on the border may ease. A Syrian promise to stay out of any effort to disarm Hezbollah would matter to Lebanon, to Israel and to the countries pushing for disarmament.
Where it stands. The talks are known only from one Reuters report that relies on unnamed sources. In the reports we hold, neither side has confirmed them.
What is being argued about
- Whether Syria's government and Hezbollah met in Turkey last month
- A reported Syrian promise not to send forces into Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah
- 'The Syrian government' or 'the Jolani regime': what each outlet calls Damascus
- One Reuters account, unnamed sources, no confirmation from either side
