Shargh: the strait stays shut 'until Trump and Netanyahu are brought down'. Der Standard: oil is being routed through it in a 'US-backed diversion'
Six reports on the Strait of Hormuz, published within 30 minutes of each other on 17 September, describe a blockade, a bargain, a bypass and a market reprieve. Deník N has Czech pumps heading for the most expensive in the country's history; Reuters has oil easing and Wall Street climbing. Not one of the six gives a price per barrel.
One waterway, four descriptions. The six reports this desk holds were published within 30 minutes of each other on 17 September. They do not describe the same strait.
| Outlet | What the strait is | Sourced? |
|---|---|---|
| Shargh (Iran) | shut "until Trump and Netanyahu are brought down" | named adviser to Iran's leader |
| Shargh (Iran) | governed by an Iran–Oman understanding, live only if Washington meets "seven conditions" | named Iranian negotiator |
| Deník N (Czechia) | a "blockade" pushing Czech pumps toward record prices | stated flat, no source |
| Der Standard (Austria) | a "US-backed diversion" for oil, after a pipeline was blown up | stated flat, no source |
| Al Jazeera English (Qatar) | backdrop to "rising global oil prices" | stated in passing |
| Reuters (US) | oil "easing", a reprieve for Wall Street | stated flat |
Nobody closes it. Two reports name who is keeping the strait shut, and both do it in the words of Iranian officials. Two others carry the blockade, the drone strikes on Saudi pipelines and the blown-up pipeline as things that simply happened, with no one named as doing them. None of the six quotes a named Saudi, American or Omani official.
What is not settled. Whether the strait is closed at all: a blockade and a diversion of Saudi crude through it cannot both be true as written. Who destroyed the pipeline. What the seven conditions are. And whether oil is rising or easing — two reports say rising, one says easing, and not one of the six gives a price per barrel.
What this is about. A single sea passage that most of the Gulf's oil has to cross, and four accounts that cannot all be true of whether it is open.
How it got here. The Strait of Hormuz is the only sea route between the Persian Gulf and the open ocean. Iran holds the northern shore; Oman's Musandam peninsula and the United Arab Emirates hold the southern side. Oil loaded in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, the Emirates and Iran leaves that way, which is why a disruption there reaches a filling station in central Europe within days. It has been a pressure point for decades: Iran and Iraq attacked each other's tankers in the Gulf through the 1980s, and Iranian commanders have raised closing the strait whenever Iran is under sanctions — during the 2011–12 standoff over its nuclear programme, and again after the United States left the 2015 nuclear agreement in May 2018. Saudi Arabia built cross-country pipelines to the Red Sea precisely so its crude would not have to pass Hormuz, which is why a blown-up pipeline and a rerouting through the strait belong to one story.
Who is in it. Iran, which the two Persian-language reports present as holding the strait shut and setting terms for reopening. The United States under Donald Trump, named as the party Iran wants conditions from and, in the Austrian report, as backing the diversion. Israel under Benjamin Netanyahu, named only inside the Iranian adviser's demand. Saudi Arabia, whose shipments to Europe the Austrian report says have stopped. Oman, which owns the far shore and has been the quiet channel between Washington and Tehran for years — the "Oman understanding" the Iranian reports refer to. And Europe, which buys.
What is at stake. If the strait stays shut, the price of oil and the inflation built on it move with it. If it opens on Iran's stated terms, Tehran will have shown it can price American policy.
Where it stands. The reports we hold do not say when the strait closed, who closed it, who destroyed the pipeline, or what the seven conditions contain.
What is being argued about
- Whether the Strait of Hormuz is closed, and what 'closed' means in each report
- Iran's stated terms for reopening it, and the Iran–Oman understanding behind them
- The halt to Saudi oil shipments to Europe and the rerouting through the strait
- Oil prices: record pump prices in one report, easing prices in another, the same afternoon
