TASS says a flock of birds, the Independent says a ‘drone threat’
Vilnius airport closed and a NATO fighter went up. Four of five reports say the object was birds; three give 38 minutes and attach it to three different things.
What happened. Vilnius airport closed on Sunday and a NATO fighter was scrambled over an object in Lithuanian airspace. Four of the five reports we hold say the object was a flock of birds.
Where they differ. TASS, Regnum, Obozrevatel and HotNews.ro put the birds in the headline or the first sentence. The Independent's headline keeps a “drone threat” in quotation marks and carries the correction only as the alert being lifted. Regnum is the only report that offers an explanation: it quotes the national crisis management centre, via Delfi, saying that on radar screens the silhouettes of birds and drones are «очень похожи» — very similar.
One number, three things. Three reports carry 38 minutes. Each attaches it to something else.
| Report | What its 38 minutes counts |
|---|---|
| TASS | airport operations suspended |
| Obozrevatel | a warning to residents of several districts, hedged to “about” |
| The Independent | the alert itself |
Not settled. No report we hold names the aircraft, the country that flew it, or how long it was airborne. None names who ordered the scramble; none names a single person on either side of the decision. None gives the time the airport reopened — HotNews.ro says only that it did. Two of the five trace the finding to Reuters and one to Delfi; two name no source at all.
What this is about. A NATO country bordering Russia's ally Belarus closed its capital's airport and sent a fighter jet up over a radar contact that turned out to be birds. The alarm is a sign of how tense the skies along NATO's eastern edge have become.
How it got here. - Lithuania left the Soviet Union in 1990 and joined NATO and the EU in 2004. It borders Belarus and Kaliningrad, a piece of Russia cut off from the rest of the country. - The Baltic states have no fighter jets of their own. Since 2004, other NATO members have taken turns guarding their airspace. Obozrevatel and HotNews.ro say Italian Eurofighter Typhoons now fly the mission from the Šiauliai air base in northern Lithuania. Obozrevatel says NATO jets have patrolled over Vilnius since July. - Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Belarus let Russian troops use its territory. Since then, drones and other objects have repeatedly crossed into NATO airspace. HotNews.ro says military drones entering Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania feed fears that the war could spread across NATO's northern borders. - On the same day, Obozrevatel reports, Russian forces struck the Yahodyn crossing on Ukraine's border with Poland. It quotes Ukraine's foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, saying Russian terror is "knocking" at the doors of the EU and NATO.
Who is involved. - Lithuania's National Crisis Management Centre issues public alerts and named the object. - NATO's air-policing jets check unknown contacts by eye. - Russia and Belarus are the states Lithuania is watching for. No report we hold ties them to Sunday's object.
What is at stake. Early radar returns from birds and drones can look alike, the centre told Delfi. If the alert is too slow, a real drone gets through. If it fires too often, airports close for nothing and people stop taking shelter warnings seriously.
Where it stands. Obozrevatel, citing the centre, says the warning covered Vilnius and three nearby districts. It ran from 12:59 to 13:37, and residents were told to go to a safe place. The jet identified the object as birds. HotNews.ro says the airport reopened and the Vilnius marathon went on without a break.
What is being argued about
- What was in the air over Lithuania: birds in four reports, a “drone threat” in the fifth
- The 38 minutes, and the three different things it is said to measure
- Who is named as deciding to close an airport and scramble a fighter — nobody
- How a NATO air-defence alert reads once the radar return is explained
