Tehran Times says 21 killed as a building collapsed; Palestine TV says one martyred in the occupation's shelling
Two deaths in Gaza reached us this week in exactly two reports — one from an Iranian state daily, one from the Palestinian Authority's broadcaster. They describe different incidents, name different actors, and no other report we could read carries either.
What we hold. Two reports, published 33 minutes apart on Thursday, carry Gaza deaths. Nothing else we could read carries either incident.
Tehran Times, the Iranian state daily, reports that "at least 21 people, including six children, were killed when a war-damaged residential building collapsed in Gaza City on Wednesday", attributed to "local rescue officials". No army appears in the sentence; the damage is an adjective.
Palestine TV, the Palestinian Authority's broadcaster, reports that a man was killed and others wounded "in the Israeli occupation's shelling east of the al-Maslakh area south of Khan Younis". The actor is named in the first three words. No source is given for the toll, and the wounded are not counted.
| Tehran Times | Palestine TV | |
|---|---|---|
| Incident | building collapse, Gaza City | shelling, south of Khan Younis |
| When | Wednesday | Thursday |
| Dead | at least 21, six of them children | one man |
| Wounded | not mentioned | "others", no number |
| Source for the toll | local rescue officials | none given |
| Who is named as acting | no one | "the occupation" |
| Any of the dead named | no | no |
Not settled. No second report corroborates either account. We hold no Israeli military account of the shelling or the collapse, no names for any of the dead, and no report that counts this week's dead in Gaza: 21 and one are two separate events, and nobody we hold adds them together.
What this is about. Two lethal incidents in Gaza this week reached the outside world, so far as we can read it, through two reports and no others — and the two describe what happened in very different language.
How it got here. Gaza is a small coastal territory, home to about two million Palestinians, governed by Hamas since 2007, after which Israel and Egypt tightly restricted movement in and out. On 7 October 2023 Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel; Israel responded with a war in Gaza that has run, through pauses and talks, ever since. Years of air strikes and ground operations have left much of the housing stock standing but structurally damaged, which is the condition Tehran Times describes when it calls the Gaza City building "war-damaged". Khan Younis, in the south, and Gaza City, in the north, have both been fought over repeatedly.
Who is in it. The Israeli military operates across the strip. Hamas governs it. The Palestinian Authority, Hamas's rival, governs parts of the occupied West Bank and owns Palestine TV, the broadcaster reporting the Khan Younis shelling. Tehran Times is an English-language paper published in Iran, a state that backs armed groups opposed to Israel and reports Gaza heavily. Both outlets are state-linked, and we say so about each in the same words.
What is at stake. Whether a death in Gaza is counted, named and attributed at all. International press access to Gaza has been restricted throughout the war, so much of what leaves the strip arrives through local rescue services, official statements and a small number of outlets. Casualty figures from every party are party claims until independently established.
Where it stands. Both reports are dated 17 September 2026. We hold no other account of either incident, from any side.
What is being argued about
- Two deaths in Gaza carried by two reports and nothing else we could read
- How each report names — or declines to name — who did the killing
- What each toll counts: children broken out in one, the wounded uncounted in both
- The missing Israeli account, and the fact that none of the dead are named
