Tehran Times says 'dozens of settlers' attacked Palestinians; Jerusalem Post counts 'over 100 rioters' and three wounded police
Settlers set fire to Palestinian homes and cars around the West Bank village of Jalud overnight into 29 September. The reports we hold agree on that. They disagree on how many attackers there were, what to call them and whose injuries to count.
What is agreed. Settlers set fire to Palestinian homes and cars in and around Jalud overnight into Tuesday. The Tehran Times, the Jerusalem Post and Ynet each say so, and none contradicts the others.
What differs.
| Outlet | Attackers | How many | Whose harm is counted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tehran Times | "Israeli settlers" | "Dozens" | Palestinians "attacked", no number |
| Jerusalem Post | "rioters", "settler extremists" | "Over 100" | Three Border Police officers, lightly wounded |
| Ynet (Hebrew) | "Jewish terror" | None given | One burned home of the Tubasi family, in a photo caption |
The count. Only the Jerusalem Post gives a number of wounded, and it counts police. No report we hold counts Palestinians hurt.
The motive. The Jerusalem Post says the riot "sought to prevent Palestinian family's coordinated return to Jalud". It states this flat. No other report carries it.
The response. The Jerusalem Post reports that President Isaac Herzog called settler violence a "moral stain" and that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the riots. A Ynet commentator calls the army's show of shock "a hollow theatre".
Not settled. - How many Palestinians were hurt. No report gives a figure. - Whether a family's return set it off. One outlet says so. - What people in Jalud say. We hold no Palestinian outlet and no resident's account. - Whether anyone was arrested. No report says.
What this is about. Israeli settlers set fire to homes and cars in a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank in one night, and Israel is now arguing over why the army did not stop them.
How it got here. Israel captured the West Bank from Jordan in the 1967 war and has held it under military occupation since. Israeli civilians began building settlements there soon after. Most states and the UN regard the settlements as illegal under international law; Israel disputes that. The Oslo Accords of 1993 and 1995 created the Palestinian Authority and split the territory into zones, leaving Israel in full control of most of the land. In July 2024 the International Court of Justice advised that the occupation is unlawful. Settler attacks on Palestinian villages have recurred for years, and drew wider attention during the Gaza war that followed the attacks of 7 October 2023.
Jalud is a Palestinian village south of Nablus, in the northern West Bank, with Israeli settlements and outposts around it.
Who is involved. The Israeli army holds authority in the West Bank. The Border Police, a unit of Israel's police, work alongside it. Settlers are Israeli civilians living in the territory. Isaac Herzog is Israel's president, a largely ceremonial office. Benjamin Netanyahu leads a coalition, formed at the end of 2022, that includes parties drawn from the settler movement. The Palestinian Authority governs parts of the territory but has no power over settlers.
What is at stake. Whether the army and police prevent such attacks and prosecute them. A Ynet commentator argues that pressure from abroad is growing and that sanctions may widen beyond goods from the settlements.
Where it stands. Israel's president and prime minister have condemned the attack, according to the Jerusalem Post. The reports we hold do not say whether anyone has been arrested.
What is being argued about
- How many settlers took part: 'dozens' or 'over 100'
- Why the only injury count is for police, not Palestinians
- Whether the army failed to stop the attack
- What to call the attackers: settlers, rioters, extremists or terror
