Tehran Times says the US left Iraq '23 years after' invading, Asharq Al-Awsat says a '12-year mission' ended, Shargh says operations go on from Jordan

The US military says its last troops have left Iraq. The reports disagree on what ended, when it began, and whether it is over at all.

US forces leave Iraq 23 years after invasion
US forces leave Iraq 23 years after invasion as published by Tehran Times · seen at Tehran Times

What is agreed. The US military says it has withdrawn all its troops from Iraq. Asharq Al-Awsat, carrying AFP copy, says the last of them left an air base in northern Iraq under a deal Baghdad and Washington struck two years ago. UPI puts the final contingent at 2,500 personnel.

What ended, and when it began. Four reports, two clocks.

Outlet What ended Counted from
Tehran Times US forces in Iraq, "23 years after it invaded" 2003
UPI "more than two decades of military involvement" 2003
Asharq Al-Awsat "a 12-year mission to fight the ISIS group" 2014
Al Jazeera English "decades of foreign military presence" not dated

The two clocks measure different things. One counts the whole US presence. The other counts the coalition mission against ISIS. Neither contradicts the other.

Whether it is over. UPI says the US withdrew "the last of its forces and equipment". Shargh, relaying Mehr, which cites Al Jazeera, reports that CENTCOM commander Brad Cooper said coalition operations continue from Jordan. It adds that logistics for Syria still run through an air base in Erbil. No other report we hold says either.

Whose day it is. Al Jazeera English leads with Iraq's own "Sovereignty Day" parades in Baghdad and Najaf. Asharq Al-Awsat leads with whether Baghdad can disarm "pro-Iran groups".

Not settled. We do not know whether US personnel remain in Iraqi Kurdistan. The Erbil claim comes from one relayed report. We hold no report from an Iraqi or Kurdish outlet.

This story is about the United States ending its military presence in Iraq, and what that leaves behind.

How it got here. In March 2003 a US-led force invaded Iraq and overthrew Saddam Hussein. An insurgency and a sectarian civil war followed. US combat troops left at the end of 2011. In 2014 the ISIS group seized large parts of Iraq and Syria. Baghdad asked for help, and a US-led coalition deployed to both countries. Asharq Al-Awsat, carrying AFP, reports that ISIS was defeated in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019, and that coalition forces stayed on to fight its remnants.

In January 2020 a US strike in Baghdad killed the Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and the Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. Iraq's parliament then voted for foreign troops to leave. Asharq Al-Awsat reports that Baghdad and Washington agreed in 2024 to wind down the mission.

Who is in it. - The United States kept troops in Iraq to fight ISIS and to counter Iran. - Iran backs armed groups inside Iraq. Many sit within the Popular Mobilisation Forces, a state-funded umbrella formed in 2014 to fight ISIS. - Iraq's government has long balanced both allies. Asharq Al-Awsat reports that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, who took office this year, has pledged that pro-Iran groups will hand their weapons to the state. - The Kurdistan Region, governed from Erbil, is autonomous and has hosted US forces. - Jordan, a US ally bordering Iraq, is where Shargh reports the coalition's headquarters now sits.

What is at stake. Asharq Al-Awsat reports an ongoing US–Iran war that has spilled into Iraq: Iran-backed militias have fired on US troops, and the US has struck their strongholds. With no US troops on the ground, the balance between Baghdad, Washington and those groups shifts.

Where it stands. The US military says the withdrawal is complete. The reports we hold do not settle whether any US role remains in Erbil.

What is being argued about

  • Whether the withdrawal ends 23 years of US presence or a 12-year mission against ISIS
  • Whether coalition operations simply move to Jordan, with logistics still running through Erbil
  • Whether Baghdad can make pro-Iran armed groups hand over their weapons
  • Asharq Al-Awsat's coalition report says in its own voice that the coalition 'helped save the country', with no one credited

Which clock is stopping

Some reports count from the 2003 invasion and others from the 2014 mission against the ISIS group. The start date decides what is ending: an occupation or a counter-insurgency mission. Only one report says the coalition's operations go on from Jordan and Erbil.

1 reports saying operations continue from Jordan or Erbil

unverified The withdrawal ends a 12-year mission against ISIS.
Only Asharq Al-Awsat, carrying agency copy, dates the mission to the coalition's deployment in 2014. Tehran Times and UPI count from the 2003 invasion. That measures the whole US presence, not this mission, so neither contradicts the 12-year figure.

Counts from the 2003 invasion, and the only report to name the insurgency and civil war it set off.
US forces leave Iraq 23 years after invasion International September 30, 2026 - 16:47 The U.S. military has withdrawn its last remaining forces from Iraq, 23 years after it invaded the country, sparking an insurgency and civil war in Iraq. After the withdrawal of the U.S. military from the rest of Iraq in January, about 1,500 service members remained in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region in the north. This was not the first U.S. military withdrawal from the country. U.S. forces pulled out in 2011, declaring their mission over amid mounting Iraqi political opposition to the presence of U.S.

Dates the end to a 12-year mission against ISIS, and says the last troops left an air base in northern Iraq under a deal agreed two years ago.
The US military announced on Wednesday that it has completed the withdrawal of all American troops from Iraq, ending a 12-year mission to fight the ISIS group. The last US troops left an air base in northern Iraq under a deal between Baghdad and Washington. The withdrawal, agreed on two years ago, comes against the backdrop of the ongoing war between the United States and Iran that has also sometimes spilled over into Iraq, with Iran-backed militias firing on US troops and the US striking the groups' strongholds. Baghdad touted the end of the US mission as a sign of the country's increasing st

Reports Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi's pledge that pro-Iran groups will hand their weapons to the state, and AFP's doubt that it will be simple.
With the US-led anti-extremist coalition leaving Iraq, Baghdad faces mounting pressure to rein in Tehran-backed armed groups, a difficult task in a country long caught between its allies, the US and Iran. Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, who assumed power earlier this year with the United States' blessing, has pledged that after the coalition exits on Wednesday, pro-Iran groups would hand over their weapons to the state. But the issue has proven far more complicated than simple announcements, said AFP. Iraq has long been a proxy battleground for the US and Iran, with each interfering in major poli

Gives the coalition's history: deployed in 2014, ISIS defeated in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019, wind-down agreed in 2024.
After more than a decade, the US-led coalition is ending its mission in Iraq, having helped save the country from extremists while causing persistent friction. Coalition troops deployed to Iraq and Syria in 2014 to fight the ISIS group, which had seized large swathes of both countries and committed massacres and atrocities, AFP said. The group was defeated in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria in 2019, but coalition forces stayed on to battle the group's remnants. Baghdad and Washington agreed in 2024 to wind down the coalition's mission, and its troops withdrew gradually from bases across the country,
