The Independent leads on a Border Force failure; the Guardian and Morning Star lead on a far-right activist who slashed a dinghy
Two boats reached Kent in two days without being intercepted, and Shabana Mahmood ordered a review. The same day Daniel Thomas chased asylum seekers across the Channel on a livestream, and hundreds protested at Gosport. The reports we can read tell different stories and give different counts for the boat he chased.
What happened. On Monday a dinghy landed at Folkestone and five people were detained. On Tuesday a second boat reached Samphire Hoe near Dover and 21 people were detained. Neither boat was intercepted. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood ordered a review, the Guardian and The Independent report. That Tuesday, the Guardian says, Daniel Thomas chased dinghies from a speedboat and streamed it to more than 100,000 people. Hundreds gathered at Gosport, and Hampshire police arrested six.
Three reports, three stories.
| The Independent | The Guardian | Morning Star | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leads with | a boat that "evades Border Force" | "Six arrested" | Thomas "slashes dinghy" |
| Thomas called | not mentioned | "far-right campaigner" | "far-right agitator" |
| People aboard | "migrants" | "asylum seekers" | "asylum-seekers" |
| On the Dover boat | not given | 51 | "about 60" |
| His prison record | no | no | two years, attempted kidnapping |
What only one report carries. Only The Independent calls undetected landings "exceptionally rare". Only the Morning Star says the rescue worker fell out of the dinghy.
What is not settled. - How many people were on the boat Thomas chased. Neither report says where its count comes from. - What Mahmood's review will examine. We hold only the headline of The Independent's report on her words. - Who the man found dead at Neufchâtel-Hardelot was. No report names him.
What this is about. People who cross the English Channel from France to England in small inflatable boats, the British government's effort to stop them, and a far-right movement that now confronts them at sea and on shore.
How it got here. The Channel is the narrow sea between northern France and south-east England. Since around 2018, people seeking asylum in the UK have crossed it in small boats launched from beaches in northern France. The crossings became a central argument in British politics. Successive governments have paid France to patrol its coast and promised to stop the boats. In 2024 the Labour government set up Border Security Command to lead that effort. Border Force, part of the Home Office, meets the boats at sea. Most are picked up before they reach land, so a boat that lands unseen is news in itself. The Guardian reports that arrivals so far this year are down 46% on the same point last year.
Who is involved. - The Home Office, led by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, runs border policy and Border Force. - The ISU and PCS unions represent the staff who pick people up at sea. They have raised concerns about their members' safety. - Daniel Thomas, who calls himself Danny Tommo, is an anti-migrant activist. The Morning Star links him to a group called Patriotic Platform. - The RNLI is the charity that runs Britain's lifeboats. It rescues people at sea when the Coastguard asks it to. - Hampshire police are looking into the footage of the slashed dinghy.
What is at stake. The government has to show that the border is under control. It also has to protect its staff, and the people it picks up, from activists who follow them at sea and on land.
Where it stands. Mahmood has ordered a review of the two landings. Police are looking into the footage of Thomas at sea. Six people were arrested at Gosport on suspicion of aggravated trespass or of assaulting an emergency worker.
What is being argued about
- Two boats landed in Kent in two days without being intercepted, and the Home Secretary ordered a review
- A far-right activist slashed a dinghy while a rescue worker was on board, and police are looking into it
- Six arrests after hundreds gathered at Gosport for a boat that docked at Dover instead
- 51 or about 60: two counts for the boat that reached Dover after 33 hours at sea
