The Independent says 21 dead and eight children; ABC News says 20 and six
Five reports on one Gaza City building collapse, one rescue service quoted in all of them, and two different counts of the children killed.
The collapse. A seven-storey, war-damaged apartment block in Gaza City came down overnight on the families sheltering inside it. At least 10 families lived there, according to Raed Al-Dahshan, director of Gaza City's civil defence service.
The figures, as each report gave them.
| Report | Dead | Children | Injured | Still trapped |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Independent | at least 21 | eight | — | nearly 100 |
| ABC News (Australia) | at least 20 | six | 14 | nearly 100 |
| RTÉ News | at least 20 | children, no number | — | dozens |
| UN News | at least 20 | — | — | — |
One service, two numbers. Both child counts name the same rescue service — The Independent credits the Palestinian Civil Defence, ABC News credits Gaza's civil defence. Nothing we hold explains how one service produced two counts on one night.
Who is named as acting. Every headline we hold makes the building the subject: it collapses, it kills. Two reports say in the body that Israeli air strikes damaged the roughly 2,000 buildings tens of thousands of Palestinians now shelter in. Two carry Israel's reason for restricting heavy machinery: to keep equipment away from armed groups.
Not settled. Whether 20 died or 21. Whether six children died or eight. How many remain under the rubble: "nearly 100" in two reports that both trace to the same rescue-service account, "dozens" in the other two. One report of five names any of the dead.
What this is about. An apartment block in Gaza City that had already been damaged in the war came down on the families sheltering inside it, and the reports that reached readers in Britain, Ireland and Australia do not agree on how many people — or how many children — it killed.
How it got here. Gaza is a narrow, densely populated coastal strip of Palestine. Hamas, an armed Palestinian movement, took control of it in 2007 after winning legislative elections the year before and then splitting violently with the rival Fatah faction; Israel and Egypt have restricted movement in and out ever since. On 7 October 2023, Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel. Israel answered with an air campaign and a ground offensive across Gaza that has run since. The air strikes are what left the housing stock in the state this story turns on: The Independent reports that tens of thousands of Palestinians now live in an estimated 2,000 damaged buildings, and ABC News reports the UN warning that many of those are in danger of collapse. A building falling down is, in that sense, not a freak event but the predicted one.
Who is in it. The families — at least 10 of them lived in this block, according to Raed Al-Dahshan, who directs Gaza City's civil defence service. The civil defence is Gaza's emergency rescue service; it digs people out and it is also the body that issues casualty counts, which is why the same service is the source behind both of the rival child numbers. Israel's military, which RTÉ News and The Independent report says heavy machinery is kept out of Gaza to deny equipment to armed groups. The UN, which monitors conditions there and reports on them.
What is at stake. Whether anyone still beneath this building is reached, and what happens to the thousands of people living in the other damaged ones.
Where it stands. On 16 September, UN News reported that search and rescue was still going on in Gaza City. The counts had not converged.
What is being argued about
- How many died: at least 20, or at least 21
- How many of the dead were children: six, or eight
- How many people are still under the rubble
- Whether anyone is named as having bombed the building
