The Independent says police are looking at Iran over RAF Fairford; Iran's embassy calls it 'malicious speculation'
Five British men from London were arrested near a Gloucestershire airbase used by US bombers. Two reports raise an Iranian link without naming who says so. Two carry Iran's denial. No report we hold names an official who says Iran was involved.
What is agreed. Five men were arrested near RAF Fairford early on Sunday 27 September. All five are in their twenties and all are British nationals from London, The Independent reports. ABC News (Australia) and RIA Novosti also say they are British. They are held on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offences.
Where the accounts split. The outlets disagree on whether Iran is behind it.
| Outlet | On an Iran link | Who is named as saying it |
|---|---|---|
| The Independent | police "understood to be investigating whether Iran is linked" | no one |
| ABC News (Australia) | arrests came "amid claims Iran's regime was attempting to attack the facility" | no one |
| IRNA | the embassy rejects "speculation by some British individuals and media outlets" | Iran's embassy |
| RIA Novosti | says only that the men are British | — |
Two separate readings of these reports found the same thing. 2 of 4 outlets raise an Iran link with no named source. 2 carry Iran's denial. None names an official who says Iran was involved.
Who knew in advance. Donald Trump said "we had them under view for a long time", The Independent reports. The same report says the operation was not intelligence-led, sourced only as "understood". It says a villager's 999 call raised the alarm. A second Independent report says Kempsford residents were told an attack was "imminent" the day before.
Not settled. We do not know if any state was involved, if police had warning, or what the men intended. No report we hold says anyone has been charged.
What this is about. Five men were arrested near a British airbase used by American bombers. The open question is whether a foreign state, Iran, was behind them.
How it got here. RAF Fairford is a Royal Air Force station in Gloucestershire, in western England. For decades the United States Air Force has flown heavy bombers from it. It is a place where British soil and American military power meet.
The United States and Iran have been adversaries since the Iranian revolution of 1979. Britain is America's closest military ally in Europe. In recent years British security officials have publicly accused Iran of backing plots against people in Britain. Iran has denied each accusation. That history is why an arrest near a US bomber base raises the question of Iran at once, before any evidence is public.
The actors. - Counter Terrorism Policing leads the inquiry. Its senior national coordinator, Vicki Evans, asked the public not to speculate about motive. - The British government. Prime minister Andy Burnham called Cobra, the emergency committee for major national incidents, The Independent reports. Defence secretary Wes Streeting thanked the police and the security services. - The United States flies bombers from the base. President Donald Trump called it "our fort". - Iran. Its embassy in London rejects any link.
What is at stake. Suppose a state is shown to be behind an armed attempt on a base used by the US. Then Britain faces a direct confrontation with that state. If no link is shown, a charge of state terrorism will have spread without evidence. A villager's account raises a separate question: how well the ground around the base was guarded.
Where it stands. The men are held on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act and of Explosives Act offences. Police were given more time to hold them. No report we hold carries a charge or an official finding on motive.
What is being argued about
- Whether Iran is linked, and who is saying so
- Whether police knew of a plot before the arrests
- A villager's account of how the alarm was raised
- Security around a base used by US bombers
