The Jerusalem Post says "terrorist", Reuters says "suspected gunman", Shargh says "anti-Zionist operation"
Two men were shot dead in the occupied West Bank on Sunday — an Israeli at the Ein Raya spring near Neveh Tzuf, a Palestinian driver near Jenin. One of them is named in the reports we hold. The other is not.
Two people were shot dead in the occupied West Bank on Sunday. An Israeli man at the Ein Raya spring near the settlement of Neveh Tzuf, where Arutz Sheva says people had come to immerse before Yom Kippur, and a Palestinian driver near Jenin. Of the ten reports we hold, three carry both deaths.
One of the two is named. Arutz Sheva gives the Israeli killed a name — Netanel Shakron of Alei Zahav, an information systems analyst, father of six, the youngest aged four. No report we hold names the Palestinian killed near Jenin, gives his age, or quotes anyone who knew him. None carries a Palestinian account of either death.
The nouns split by masthead:
| Report | The man who fired at the spring | The man killed near Jenin |
|---|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | "the terrorist" | "terrorist", ramming stated as fact |
| Arutz Sheva | "the terrorist", "murder" | not carried |
| Al-Monitor, carrying Reuters | "a suspected Palestinian gunman", police said | motorist, ramming "the military said" |
| Al Jazeera | "an Israeli settler was fatally shot" — no actor named | "Israeli forces killed a Palestinian man" |
| Al-Modon | a settler killed | "martyred" by occupation forces, ramming alleged |
| Shargh | "an anti-Zionist operation" | not carried |
Not settled. Whether the man near Jenin tried to run soldiers over: that is the Israeli military's account, and nothing we hold tests it. Whether the gunman was caught: only Arutz Sheva reports an arrest — wounded by a soldier, fled to a nearby hospital, seized there. Asharq Al-Awsat, filed earliest, still has the Israeli man critically wounded.
What this is about. Two men were shot dead on the same Sunday morning in the same occupied territory, and the reports describing them do not agree on what to call either killing.
How it got here. Israel captured the West Bank from Jordan in the 1967 war and has held it under military occupation ever since. Israeli governments have built settlements there for Israeli civilians: Neveh Tzuf and Alei Zahav, the two places in this story, are settlements north-west of Ramallah, and they elect regional councils that speak for their residents. The Oslo Accords of 1993-95 created the Palestinian Authority to administer Palestinian towns, but Israel kept security control over most of the territory — which is why soldiers, not Palestinian police, are at both scenes here. The International Court of Justice said in July 2024 that Israel's continued presence in the occupied territory is unlawful; Israel rejects the finding. Jenin, in the north, has been raided by the Israeli army for years. The Gaza war that began on 7 October 2023 runs alongside all of this rather than replacing it; the West Bank has its own steady record of shootings and raids, reported in far less detail.
Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement, begins on Sunday evening. Immersing in water beforehand is a customary purification, and it is why both Israeli reports say people were at the spring.
Who is in it. The Israeli army and Border Police, who shot the driver near Jenin and hunted the gunman; the Shin Bet security service, which Arutz Sheva says guided that pursuit; the Samaria Regional Council, the settlers' own local authority, which announced Shakron's death. Absent from every report we hold: the Palestinian Authority, and any Palestinian who saw either shooting.
What is at stake. The words are the argument. A murdered father of six and a dead settler are the same man. An attempted ramming and an alleged attempted ramming are the same claim, with and without a source attached.
What is being argued about
- What each outlet calls the man who shot an Israeli at the Ein Raya spring — terrorist, suspected gunman, or the author of an anti-Zionist operation
- Whether the Palestinian killed near Jenin tried to ram soldiers, and which reports attach a source to that account
- Who is named and who is counted: one death with a name, a town, an employer and six children; one with none of these
- Whether the gunman was caught, reported by a single outlet fifteen minutes before another described an open manhunt
