The US energy secretary says 17 million barrels crossed Hormuz on Monday. AFP says Iran has shut the strait.
LBCI carried it as a single line of ticker at 08:01 on Wednesday 2 September: US energy secretary Chris Wright told CNBC that more than 17 million barrels of oil crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Monday. He did not say which Monday. The same week AFP wrote that Tehran has "effectively shut" the waterway for six months, and carried Trump's post that the United States has it "under U.S.A. control". Neither outlet mentions the other. Nobody outside government has published a count.
The number. LBCI carried it as one line of ticker at 08:01 on Wednesday 2 September: US energy secretary Chris Wright told CNBC that more than 17 million barrels of oil crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Monday. No date, no second count, no source but Wright.
| Whose account | Carried by | What the strait is |
|---|---|---|
| Chris Wright, energy secretary, to CNBC | LBCI, 2 Sep, 08:01 | crossed by "more than 17 million barrels" on Monday |
| AFP, in its own voice | Al-Monitor, 2 Sep | "effectively shut" by Tehran for six months |
| Trump, on Truth Social | AFP via Al-Monitor, 2 Sep | "under U.S.A. control" |
| JD Vance, at the White House | Haaretz, 4 Sep | crossed by vessels Iran approves |
Shut, or approved? Vance describes ships that do pass — with Iran's permission. AFP's "effectively shut" and Wright's 17 million barrels may be describing the same water. No report we hold says so. None mentions another's account.
Who counted. One volume figure. One source behind it: a US cabinet secretary, on a business channel. No tanker tracker, shipping estimate or Iranian figure appears anywhere we hold. Nothing from inside Iran reached us at all — a hole in our reach, not a quiet day in Tehran.
What this does not settle. Which Monday Wright meant: the nearest to that ticker is 31 August, and no report says. What the 17 million counts — a day's crossings, tankers only, a cleared backlog. And who controls passage: Trump says the United States, AFP says Tehran shut it, Vance says Iran decides who crosses.
What this is about. Whether oil tankers can get through the Strait of Hormuz, and who decides, in a war between the United States and Iran.
The strait. Hormuz is the narrow channel between Iran and Oman. It joins the Gulf to the open sea. Oil and gas from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, the UAE, Qatar and Iran pass through it. AFP says one-fifth of the world's oil flowed through it before the war.
How it got here. - For two decades, Iran's nuclear programme has been the core of its dispute with the US and Israel. A 2015 deal limited the programme in return for lifting sanctions. The US left that deal in 2018 and brought the sanctions back. - Hamas led an attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, and war in Gaza followed. After that, Israel and Iran struck each other directly for the first time in 2024. In June 2025, Israel bombed Iran for twelve days and the US struck three Iranian nuclear sites. - AFP reports that the current war began on 28 February 2026, when US and Israeli attacks on Iran killed its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. - A ceasefire followed. AFP says it collapsed after attacks on commercial ships in the strait. - The US struck Iran again on Sunday 30 August. Trump says this answered an Iranian attempt to lay sea mines in the strait and missiles fired at a base in Jordan. AFP reports that Iran then hit US bases in Jordan, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain and Iraq's Kurdistan region. Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry says Iran struck the Saudi tanker Sadr in the strait, killing crew members.
The actors. - Iran holds the northern shore. AFP writes that Iran has effectively shut the strait. - The United States wants the strait open. Trump says the US now controls it. Washington is widening sanctions on countries that trade with Iran. - Gulf producers depend on the strait for their exports. Vance says several are quietly helping the US. - China, a major buyer of Gulf oil, stayed out of a G20 finance ministers' call for "free and safe" passage, LBCI reports.
What is at stake. The world's oil supply and its price, the safety of crews on the tankers, and whether the war spreads further.
Where it stands. Six months in, the two sides are not talking. Haaretz reports Vance saying Washington has cut contact with Iran while Iran fires at ships. No count of traffic through the strait has been published by anyone outside government.
The story so far
- Washington says 17 million barrels crossed Hormuz. Shipping traders say a third of that. · 3 Sep 2026

What is being argued about
- Which Monday is it? The ticker ran Wednesday 2 September, which puts "Monday" at 31 August — our arithmetic, not Wright's word. No report dates it.
- What does 17 million barrels count — one day's crossings, tankers only, a cleared backlog? Wright's line does not say and LBCI does not ask.
- Can a strait be shut and carry 17 million barrels? Vance describes vessels passing with Iran's approval, which would reconcile the two — but no report puts them side by side.
- Who has counted, other than the US government? No tanker-tracking, shipping-industry or Iranian figure appears we hold.
