TheJournal.ie reports chaos and two player votes; RTÉ and The Independent say only that Ireland will play Israel

Ireland's footballers will face Israel in Hungary. Three outlets describe the day in three ways, and only one says why the match is disputed.

What we hold. Five reports from three outlets, all filed on 27 September. Three are from TheJournal.ie. Four are little more than a headline and a line.

What they agree on. The Nations League match against Israel goes ahead, in Debrecen, Hungary. TheJournal.ie and The Independent both report that goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has withdrawn.

Where they differ.

TheJournal.ie RTÉ News The Independent
The day "Chaos, pain, apologies" a "controversial" game "one of the world's most controversial fixtures"
Player votes two rounds, both to play not carried "the game will go ahead"
Why it is disputed not said not said boycott calls; a UN commission's genocide finding

The broadcaster. RTÉ's statement, quoted by The Independent, says it will show both games because its contract requires it. It will use no studio, no pundits and no RTÉ commentator. It has taken no advertising.

What is not settled. - Two votes: only TheJournal.ie reports them. No report gives a count. - The "hours of confusion": TheJournal.ie names no one as causing them. - The call on the board: we hold no reply from the FAI or from the governing parties. - No report we hold quotes a player who voted to play.

What this is about. Whether Ireland's men's football team should play Israel at all, and whether the people who run Irish football handled that question well.

How it got here. On 7 October 2023 Hamas led an attack on southern Israel. Israel's war in Gaza followed. Irish governments have been among the European Union's sharpest critics of how Israel has fought that war. In May 2024 Ireland recognised the State of Palestine, alongside Spain and Norway.

Israel plays its football in Europe as a member of UEFA, the European governing body. The Nations League is UEFA's competition between national teams. The draw put Ireland and Israel in the same group, so they must meet twice. The Independent reports that a United Nations independent international commission found Israel committed genocide in Gaza. Israel rejects that charge. The Independent says calls in Ireland to boycott both games came after the finding.

Who is involved. - The FAI, the Football Association of Ireland, runs the game in the Republic and answers to UEFA for the team's fixtures. Its board is the target of the criticism. - The players. TheJournal.ie reports that they voted on whether to play. One of them, goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, withdrew. - RTÉ, the Irish public broadcaster, which holds the rights to show the games. - Sinn Féin, the largest opposition party in the Dáil, and the Social Democrats, a smaller opposition party. Ireland is governed by a coalition led by Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.

What is at stake. For the FAI, its authority over the national team. For the players, whether they are seen to take a side. For Irish politics, whether a foreign-policy position reaches into sport.

Where it stands. The match goes ahead in Debrecen, Hungary. The Independent says the second game follows next Sunday.

What is being argued about

  • Whether Ireland should play Israel at all
  • How the players decided, and how many times
  • Whether the FAI board should step aside
  • Why RTÉ cut back its coverage
