Treasury says Golden Global moved money for the Revolutionary Guard. An-Nahar says on suspicion, IRNA says under a pretext.

The US Treasury designated a Turkish bank and two subsidiaries on Friday. Nobody disputes the designation. Seven reports carry three different certainties about what it was for, and none of them tests it.

What happened. The US Treasury designated Golden Global Bank and two subsidiaries on Friday. An-Nahar cites Treasury's own website and counts three entities; The Jerusalem Post names the mechanism, the OFAC Specially Designated Nationals list. The action itself is not in dispute.

The ground for it is. One designation reaches readers with three different certainties attached.

Size. Al-Monitor, carrying Reuters, calls it "a small Turkish investment bank". No other report says how large it is, so the only measure of what was cut off appears once.

Who answers. Two reports quote Scott Bessent directly. An-Nahar carries his warning to Iran's backers, "we know you and we know where you are", with no reply beneath it. IRNA alone carries the bank's answer: it will go to court. No report reaches a Turkish official.

Not settled. No report holds a transaction, a document, or a finding from anyone but Treasury. Anadolu's report that the EU has joined rests on Bessent's own post on X; no EU institution or spokesman appears in anything we hold.

What this is about. The United States is trying to cut Iran off from the world's banks, and on 4 September it reached for the first time into a bank in Turkey, a NATO ally.

How it got here. - 1979. Iran's revolution creates the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a military force separate from the regular army. Its Quds Force operates abroad. - 2015–2018. Iran and world powers agree a deal limiting Iran's nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief. In 2018 the first Trump administration withdraws and reimposes US sanctions. - 2019. Washington lists the IRGC as a terrorist organisation. - 2022. The US sanctions Turkish businessman Sitki Ayan and his companies. Treasury now names him among those it says used the Golden Global bank. - This year. The Jerusalem Post describes a US-Israel war with Iran now six months old. Al-Monitor and Reuters report a US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow sea lane between Iran and Oman through which Gulf oil reaches the world. Bessent called last month for an "economic onslaught" against Iran's financial links. Al-Monitor reports that this became "Operation Economic Outcast".

Who is involved, and why. - The US Treasury. Its Office of Foreign Assets Control keeps the sanctions list. A listed firm loses access to the dollar system. - Iran needs oil revenue to fund the war, Bessent says. Most of that oil goes to China. - China is Iran's largest trading partner. Al-Monitor reports that Beijing has warned it will retaliate if its banks are sanctioned, and that Washington has so far not sanctioned them. - Turkey borders Iran and runs its own banking system. Anadolu is its state news agency.

What is at stake. Treasury says it is closing the routes that carry Iranian money. Al-Monitor quotes experts who say Iran has long practice at getting around sanctions. They doubt that financial pressure alone will end the war or reopen the strait.

Where it stands. The Jerusalem Post reports that Bessent expects new sanctions roughly every week, and more banks first. The bank says it will fight the listing in court. Bessent says the EU has joined the campaign. No report we hold carries a statement from the EU itself.

What is being argued about

  • Whether the bank moved money for the Revolutionary Guard, or is only suspected of it: one report states it, one calls it suspicion, one calls it a pretext.
  • How much was cut off. Only Al-Monitor, carrying Reuters, says the bank is small.
  • Whether the EU has joined the campaign, which rests on Bessent's post on X and no source in Brussels.
  • What Ankara says. No report we hold reaches a Turkish official.
