Trump at the UN: 'less combative' says the Sydney Morning Herald, 'bizarre and bombastic' says The Independent — and only The Independent has Iran walking out
Four outlets carry the same passage: a deal with Iran after the US midterms, or 'annihilate the Islamic Republic'. They disagree on how the hall took it, and on which delegations left.
Same speech, different rooms. The Sydney Morning Herald found Donald Trump "less combative than his effort last year". The Independent called the speech "bizarre and bombastic" and said delegates sat "in stunned silence". RTÉ News reported "much applause" when he said Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.
The threat and the offer. All four outlets carry one passage. Trump said he had "a big decision": a deal with Iran, or to "annihilate the Islamic Republic". TheJournal.ie quotes the next line instead, driving Iran "into hell". Trump predicted a deal after the US midterm elections in November.
| Outlet | Leads with | Walkout it reports |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney Morning Herald | a deal after the midterms | Cuba |
| RTÉ News | "peacemaker and warmaker"; "annihilate" | none |
| TheJournal.ie | Cuba leaving; Iran "into hell" | Cuba |
| The Independent | a "stone-faced" assembly | Iran, then Cuba |
Ireland's reply. RTÉ News reports that the Taoiseach told reporters he saw both the peacemaker and the warmaker in the speech.
Australia's position. The Herald reports that Trump rejected a "globalist scheme" to regulate AI. That was a day after Anthony Albanese backed a call for international oversight of frontier AI.
Not settled. Whether Iran's delegation walked out. Only The Independent says it did. RTÉ News mentions Iran's delegation in New York but does not say it left. For The Independent's "Two countries walk out" report we hold only the headline. No report gives a death toll from the war.
What this is about. The US president used the year's biggest diplomatic stage to tell other governments he might either destroy Iran's government or make peace with it.
How it got here. Iran's nuclear programme has been at the centre of its dispute with the United States and Israel for two decades. In 2015 Iran agreed with world powers to limit the programme in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. Trump took the US out of that agreement in 2018, in his first term. Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023, and war in Gaza followed. After that, Israel and Iran moved from a shadow conflict to striking each other directly. In June 2025 the US bombed Iranian nuclear sites. Nearly seven months ago the US joined Israel in open war with Iran, the reports say. Why it did so is disputed. Washington says Iran must never have a nuclear weapon; The Independent calls the war unprovoked. A deal to end the war collapsed, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. Iran's Revolutionary Guard still disrupts shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow channel between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula that carries much of the Gulf's oil to the world.
Who is involved. The UN General Assembly meets each September, and by custom the US president speaks on the first day. Cuba has been under a US embargo since the early 1960s. The International Criminal Court, which Trump attacked in the speech, tries war crimes. The US has never joined it. The court has issued an arrest warrant for Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. Ireland's Taoiseach and Australia's prime minister, Anthony Albanese, were both in New York.
What is at stake. A deal would end a war that The Independent says has upended energy markets. Escalation would mean the destruction Trump described. US voters go to the polls on 3 November. The Independent cites a poll putting approval of his handling of Iran at 24 percent.
Where it stands. There is no deal. Last week a UN fact-finding mission said it had reasonable grounds to believe US forces committed war crimes in two strikes on Iran, The Independent reports. One strike hit a primary school in Minab. RTÉ News says the next thing to watch is whether any US official meets Iran's delegation in New York.
What is being argued about
- Trump's choice between a deal with Iran and 'annihilating' it
- Whether Iran's delegation walked out, or only Cuba's
- How the assembly received the speech
- Trump's rejection of AI regulation that Australia has joined
