Trump calls the Xi talks 'excellent', UPI says the leaders revealed nothing, and none of eight reports mentions trade
Donald Trump and Xi Jinping met at the White House on Thursday. Two Russian outlets lead on Trump's verdict. Three outlets lead on what Xi asked for on Iran and Taiwan. UPI says nothing about the talks was disclosed. None of the eight reports we hold names tariffs, trade or export controls.
What happened. Xi Jinping met Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday 24 September, UPI and The Guardian report. Reuters says the summit began "with great fanfare but low expectations" but does not say whose expectations those are.
Three accounts of one meeting.
| What the report leads on | Outlets | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Trump: the talks went "excellently" | Vedomosti, Life.ru | 2 of 8 |
| Xi's positions on Iran and Taiwan | Suspilne, Efimerida ton Syntakton, Shargh | 3 of 8 |
| Nothing about the talks was revealed | UPI | 1 of 8 |
| The welcome, not the talks | Reuters, The Guardian | 2 of 8 |
Trump's side. Life.ru says Trump gave his verdict when reporters asked about the outcome. Its first sentence states that the talks went excellently as fact. The attribution to Trump comes one sentence later.
Xi's side. Suspilne says Xi restated China's position on Taiwan. Efimerida ton Syntakton says he urged Washington to oppose "Taiwan independence". It also says he asked the US and Iran to return to "the memorandum of understanding of June". Shargh calls the same agreement "the Islamabad understanding".
The sketch. The Guardian writes of Trump's "deference". It describes both leaders in its own voice and attributes the description to no one.
What is not settled. - Whether anything was agreed. No report carries a joint statement. - Whether tariffs or export controls were discussed. 0 of 8 reports mention them. - What the Iran agreement contains. Two reports name it, and neither says what is in it. - Whether Trump answered Xi on Iran or Taiwan. No report carries a reply.
What this is about. The leaders of the world's two largest economies met in Washington. Trade, Taiwan and a US conflict with Iran hung over the meeting.
How it got here. In his first term, starting in 2018, Donald Trump put tariffs on Chinese goods. Beijing hit back with its own tariffs, and the trade war that followed never fully ended. Under President Joe Biden, the US kept most of those tariffs. It also added export controls that limit China's access to advanced chips and the tools used to make them. Trump returned to office in January 2025 and raised tariffs on China again. China retaliated. Since then the two governments have moved between escalation and temporary truces.
The actors. - Donald Trump, US president. He has made tariffs his main tool of economic pressure. - Xi Jinping, China's president and head of the Chinese Communist Party since 2012. China is the world's largest exporter of manufactured goods. - Taiwan governs itself. Beijing claims it as Chinese territory. The US does not formally recognise Taiwan, but it sells the island weapons under a 1979 law. Taiwan is the most sensitive issue between the two governments. - Iran is under US sanctions, and China is the largest buyer of its oil. The reports we hold say Xi urged the US and Iran to return to an earlier understanding. Efimerida ton Syntakton's headline speaks of a war in Iran. We hold no report that sets out that conflict or what the understanding contains.
What is at stake. Tariffs between the US and China feed through to prices for households and to jobs in factories and ports on both sides of the Pacific. Chip export controls shape who can build advanced technology. Iran matters to both because of oil and shipping.
Where it stands. The meeting took place on 24 September. By evening, none of the reports we hold carried an agreement, a joint statement or any mention of trade.
What is being argued about
- Whether the summit produced anything: Trump says it was 'excellent', UPI says nothing was revealed
- Xi's call for the US and Iran to return to an earlier understanding, which outlets name differently
- China's restated position on Taiwan
- Why no report we hold mentions tariffs or export controls
