Trump hails a 'truly great friendship', Warren says he 'loves dictators' — and one outlet reports a trade truce to January
Xi Jinping reached the White House on Thursday for his first US state visit since 2015. Of 11 reports we hold, most cover the welcome. One carries a trade-truce extension to 10 January 2027, and it rests on one US official.
The welcome. Donald Trump met Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday, the Independent and The Hill report. Xi reached the White House on Thursday morning, the Guardian says. The Independent calls it Xi's first US state visit since 2015.
Six outlets, six leads.
| Outlet | What it leads with |
|---|---|
| The Guardian | Trump says the two have "forged a truly great friendship" |
| Reuters (French service) | an "accueil d'exception" — an exceptional welcome |
| The Independent | a "historic state visit"; Xi, via Xinhua: "partners, not rivals" |
| The Hill | Senator Elizabeth Warren: Trump "loves dictators" |
| Life.ru | 2.5 hours for talks; the 1972 "toast to peace" wine at dinner |
| Suspilne | truce extended to 10 January 2027, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says |
The agenda. The Guardian lists trade, AI and Taiwan. The Independent lists trade, technology and Iran. Only the Guardian names Taiwan.
Three reports on the sideshow. The Independent ran two: an old Trump post attacking Obama for hosting Xi in 2012, and an aide in Trump's photo. Life.ru ran the dinner menu.
What is not settled - The truce date rests on Bessent alone, via Suspilne. No report we hold carries a Chinese confirmation. - No report says what the talks produced beyond that. - Xi speaks in one report, through Chinese state media. - One Independent report calls the Andrews greeting the first of its kind since 1962. It gives no source. Another Independent report calls it only "an unusual move".
What this is about. China's leader is in Washington for talks with the US president on trade, technology and security. It comes after years of economic conflict between the world's two largest economies.
How it got here. The US and the People's Republic of China opened relations in 1972, when President Richard Nixon visited Beijing and dined with Premier Zhou Enlai. Washington formally recognised Beijing in 1979 and ended official ties with Taiwan. Under US law it kept unofficial links and arms sales. Xi Jinping has led China since 2012–13. In Trump's first term, from 2017, he put tariffs on Chinese goods and Beijing answered in kind, starting a trade war. Trump has been back in office since January 2025. The Independent reports that he again put tariffs on China before the two sides agreed a trade truce. Trump made a state visit to China in May, and this is Xi's return visit.
The actors. - The United States wants lower barriers for its exports and limits on China's access to advanced chips and AI technology. - China wants tariffs lifted and export controls eased. It treats Taiwan as its own territory. - Taiwan governs itself and is not at the table. Beijing claims it. Washington does not formally recognise it but supports its defence. - Trump's domestic critics say he is too soft on Beijing on AI and chips, the Independent reports.
What is at stake. If the truce holds, tariffs stay where they are and trade keeps flowing. If it lapses, both sides can raise tariffs again. How the two leaders speak about Taiwan is read closely in Taipei and in Beijing.
Where it stands. The leaders met on Thursday. According to Suspilne, Bessent says the truce now runs to 10 January 2027. We hold no statement from Beijing on that date, and no report from a Chinese outlet.

What is being argued about
- How outlets described the welcome: 'great friendship', 'exceptional', 'historic', or a welcome for a 'dictator'
- The trade truce extended to 10 January 2027, reported once and sourced to the US side only
- What the talks cover: trade, AI, Taiwan and Iran, depending on the outlet
- Why most reports cover the ceremony and not the talks
