Trump says 'Europe' agreed a 'huge' diesel release; Macron says the G7 agreed 100 million barrels of diesel and crude
Two leaders gave two accounts of one fuel deal within minutes of each other. Trump named Europe and gave no volume. Macron named the G7 and gave a figure, a four-month timetable and a ban on export bans. No other government confirms either account in the reports we hold.
Two accounts. On Friday Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that Europe had "just agreed" to release a huge amount of its diesel stocks, and that the process would begin at once, An-Nahar reports. Soon after, An-Nahar and LBCI carried a statement from Emmanuel Macron. He described a different deal, with different parties.
| Trump | Macron | |
|---|---|---|
| Who agreed | "Europe" | G7 states |
| What | diesel | diesel and crude |
| How much | "huge amount", no figure | up to 100 million barrels |
| Over what time | "immediately" | four months, from now |
| Through whom | not said | the International Energy Agency |
| Export bans | not said | none between G7 states |
Who carried which. 6 of the 9 outlets we hold carry Trump's version. 2 carry Macron's figure. Reuters filed in English, Spanish and Portuguese, and we count it once.
The only European official. TASS quotes a Commission spokesperson, Anna-Kaisa Itkonen. She says the Commission is coordinating a plan with the IEA and the G7. That is a plan in progress, not a deal done.
What is not settled. - Whether any release has started. Both leaders say "immediately". No report shows fuel moving. - Whether 100 million barrels is a G7 figure or Macron's. No other G7 government confirms it in our reports. - How much of it is diesel. - Whether a pledge against export bans was agreed. Only An-Nahar reports it, from Macron.
This story is about how the richest democracies are trying to bring fuel prices down by releasing emergency stocks.
How it got here. In 1973 Arab oil producers cut supply to Western states, and prices jumped. In response, rich importing countries set up the International Energy Agency (IEA) in 1974. Its members must keep emergency stocks of oil. In a crisis the agency can coordinate releasing them. Members have done this several times, most recently after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Prices are rising again. An-Nahar blames the wars in Iran and in Ukraine. Ukrainska Pravda reports that G7 leaders held an urgent meeting about fuel prices on Friday.
The actors. - The G7: the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Britain, Italy and Canada. The European Union also attends. France chairs the group in 2026. An-Nahar says Macron chaired Friday's talks. - The United States, under Donald Trump, wants lower pump prices. - The European Commission runs the EU's common trade policy. That covers any rule on fuel exports. - The IEA coordinates any release by its members.
What is at stake. Diesel runs lorries, farm machinery and ships. When it is scarce, food and goods cost more. A release only works if countries keep selling to each other. If one country banned fuel exports to protect its own supply, its allies would lose that fuel. That is why the reports carry a promise of no export bans next to the release.
Where it stands. The two leaders give different accounts of who agreed and how much. The Commission says the plan is still being coordinated. No report we hold shows a release under way.
What is being argued about
- Who agreed: 'Europe' (Trump) or the G7 (Macron)
- How much: no figure, or up to 100 million barrels of diesel and crude
- Whether G7 states pledged not to ban fuel exports to each other
- Whether the release has begun or is still being planned
