Trump says the Fairford suspects were under US watch 'for a long time'; British police say their inquiry is 'in the early stages'
Five men were arrested near RAF Fairford, a Gloucestershire base used by the US Air Force. Police suspect explosives offences and the preparation of a terrorist act. Police have named no target and no motive. The US president has already described a plot.
What police say. Counter Terrorism Policing said it received a call at around 12.45am on Sunday. The caller reported three suspicious vehicles heading towards the base. Armed officers then arrested five men in Whelford under the Explosives Act. The men were then further arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. The Independent and the Morning Star report that about 85 households left their homes behind a 400-metre cordon.
What the US president says. Donald Trump told reporters "We had them under view for a long time", The Independent reports. He said the men were "looking to do big damage to our fort". No police statement in any report we hold mentions earlier surveillance.
One base, four descriptions.
| Outlet | What the base is used for |
|---|---|
| The Independent | "defensive operations against Iran", in its own voice |
| Morning Star | "used by the US Air Force"; "defensive" only in quotation marks |
| RTÉ News | "used to strike Iran" |
| ABC News (Australia) | used by the US Air Force "since the start of the Iranian war" |
How police heard. RTÉ calls it "a tip-off". The Independent and the Morning Star say a resident called police. A villager told The Independent that the caller first rang the base police and got no answer. No report we hold carries a reply from the base.
Not settled. - Whether there was a plot, and against what. - Whether anyone watched the men before Sunday. - Whether Iran is involved. The Independent cites The Times, which we could not read, and says detectives keep an open mind. - What the vans held. Aerial footage showed "large black barrels", and police have not said what they were.
What this is about. British police arrested five men on suspicion of terrorism near an English airbase that the United States uses in its war with Iran.
How it got here. RAF Fairford is on the border of Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. It is a Royal Air Force station. For decades it has also hosted American aircraft, under the arrangements that let US forces, as NATO allies, use British bases. The Independent reports that the US Air Force's 501st Combat Support Wing is based there.
This year the United States went to war with Iran. The Independent and the Morning Star report what followed at Fairford. In the spring, the then prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer, allowed what the government called "defensive" US action against Iranian missile sites from British bases. Four US bombers then landed at Fairford. In July, Iran said British airbases used by the US were "legitimate targets", according to The Independent. The British government replied that it "stands ready 24/7 to defend itself". Peace campaigners have also protested at Fairford against the bombers.
Who is involved. - Counter Terrorism Policing, a national network of British police forces, leads the inquiry with Gloucestershire Police. - The Army's bomb disposal unit examined the vans. - Andy Burnham, now prime minister, is receiving updates. - The US Air Force runs its own security on the base. - Donald Trump, the US president, has spoken publicly about the case.
What is at stake. If the arrests are linked to a foreign state, the war has reached British soil. The argument over lending British bases to the US would then sharpen. If there is no such link, this is a domestic terrorism case at a sensitive site. Either way, a foreign leader describing a live British investigation could complicate any trial.
Where it stands. Five men are in custody and no one has been charged. Fairford is at Delta, the highest US threat level. RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk is at Charlie, the second-highest.
What is being argued about
- Whether the men were under surveillance before Sunday, as Donald Trump says
- How outlets describe the base's role in the Iran war: defensive, striking, or simply 'used by'
- Whether Iran is linked, a line credited to The Times alone
- How police were alerted: a tip-off, or a resident's 999 call after the base police did not answer
