Two Israeli outlets call it an 'elimination', Asharq Al-Awsat's sources say only 'killed' — and no report says who else died
The Israeli army says an Israeli strike killed the commander of Hamas's Northern Gaza Brigade on 29 September. We hold six reports on it. Every detail in them comes from the Israeli army or the defence minister. None counts anyone else killed or hurt, and none quotes anyone in Gaza.
What is agreed. An Israeli strike in Gaza killed the head of Hamas's Northern Gaza Brigade. The Jerusalem Post, citing the Israeli army, and Arutz Sheva both report it. Asharq Al-Awsat says its own sources confirmed that a senior Hamas commander was killed. Only the Israeli army gives a name: Beik.
Four outlets, four framings.
| Outlet | Word for the killing | Whose account |
|---|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | "the elimination of his predecessor" | "according to the IDF" |
| Arutz Sheva | "the elimination of the commander" | Defence Minister Katz |
| Asharq Al-Awsat | "Senior Hamas Commander Killed" | its own unnamed sources |
| Haaretz | "IDF killings of Hamas commanders" | links it to the hostages and the election |
The count of three. The Jerusalem Post says three Hamas brigade commanders have been killed since 11 September. It says the intelligence came from the capture of Hamas official Mu'in al-Arabid on 2 September. No other report we hold gives that number.
The threat abroad. Arutz Sheva's headline says Katz threatened Hamas leaders abroad. The part of its report we hold says only that he will keep pursuing Hamas's senior leaders.
What is not settled. - Whether anyone besides the commander was killed or hurt. No report says. - What Hamas says. We hold no Hamas statement and no report from a Palestinian outlet. - Where in Gaza the strike hit. No report names the place.
What this is about. Israel has killed a senior commander of Hamas's armed wing in Gaza, and its defence minister says there will be more such killings.
How it got here. Hamas has governed the Gaza Strip since 2007. On 7 October 2023, fighters led by Hamas attacked southern Israel and took hostages back into Gaza. Israel answered with a war on Gaza that lasted two years. A ceasefire brokered by the United States took effect in October 2025. It was built around the return of the hostages. It did not end Hamas's control of Gaza, and since then Israel has kept striking people it says are Hamas fighters.
The actors. - Hamas's armed wing is organised into regional brigades. The Northern Gaza Brigade covers the north of the Strip. Its previous commander, Ahmed Ghandour, was killed in the war in November 2023. - The Israeli army carries out the strikes. It is also the source for most of what is published about them. - Israel Katz has been defence minister since November 2024. He speaks for the government on these killings. - Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister, faces a general election this autumn. - Gadi Eisenkot is a former army chief of staff who sat in the war cabinet. He now leads an opposition party. - Hamas's political leaders live mostly abroad, many in Qatar, which has hosted them for years. Israel struck Hamas leaders in Doha in September 2025.
What is at stake. If Israel keeps killing commanders during the ceasefire, the truce does not protect the people it targets. A threat against leaders abroad reaches into the countries that mediate between Israel and Hamas. An election gives every side a reason to be seen acting.
Where it stands. The Israeli army says the commander is dead. We hold no response from Hamas, no Palestinian account and no count of anyone else killed.
What is being argued about
- Every report that names a source names the Israeli army or its minister
- 'Elimination' versus 'killed' for the same strike
- Whether three commanders killed in three weeks is a new campaign during a ceasefire
- Whether the killings are being tied to Israel's election
