UN list of settlement-linked firms grows to 214: a 'database' to the Jerusalem Post, an 'Israel blacklist' to JNS, 'Zionist settlements' to IRNA
The UN human rights office added 61 companies to its list of businesses tied to Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The three reports that give numbers agree on them. The four reports use three names for the land and two words for the list, and the only side quoted is Israel.
What happened. The UN human rights office added 61 companies to its database of businesses tied to Israeli settlements. That brings the total to 214. The Jerusalem Post, Arutz Sheva and IRNA all give both figures.
Israel objected. The Jerusalem Post reports "sharp Israeli criticism". Arutz Sheva reports "condemnation from Israel". JNS quotes Israel's mission in Geneva: the database "was established solely to persecute the Jewish state, with no equivalent anywhere else in the world". Only JNS carries that wording.
Same list, different words.
| Outlet | The list | The place |
|---|---|---|
| Jerusalem Post | database of businesses tied to settlements | West Bank |
| JNS | Israel blacklist (headline, no quotation marks) | not named in the text we hold |
| Arutz Sheva | 'settler blacklist' (headline, in quotation marks) | Judea and Samaria |
| IRNA | firms that, in the UN office's view, play a role in violating Palestinians' rights | occupied West Bank; 'Zionist-inhabited' settlements |
Who speaks. Three of four reports carry Israel's objection. None quotes the UN office on its reasons. None quotes a listed company or a Palestinian.
What is not settled. - Which 61 companies were added. No report we hold names one. - Why the office added them now, in its own words. We hold no statement from it. - How Palestinians or the listed firms responded. We hold no Palestinian outlet on this event.
What this is about. A UN office keeps a public list of companies it says do business with Israeli settlements in the West Bank. It has just made that list longer, and Israel has objected.
How it got here. Israel captured the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, from Jordan in the 1967 war. It has held the territory since. Israeli civilians have settled there in communities built under Israeli rule. Most governments and the UN treat the settlements as illegal under international law. The UN Security Council said so in resolution 2334 in December 2016. Israel disputes this, and many Israelis call the land by its biblical names, Judea and Samaria. In March 2016 the UN Human Rights Council asked the UN human rights office to compile a database of businesses involved in settlement activity. The first version was published in February 2020, and it has been updated since. In July 2024 the International Court of Justice gave an advisory opinion that Israel's continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is unlawful. Israel rejected that opinion.
The actors. The UN human rights office (OHCHR) is based in Geneva. It compiles the list because the Council told it to. Israel, through its mission in Geneva, says the list singles it out. Palestinians, whose land and movement the settlements affect, are the people the list is meant to protect. The listed companies face pressure from investors, pension funds and boycott campaigns.
What is at stake. The list carries no legal penalty of its own. Its weight lies in what others do with it: whether funds sell their holdings, whether governments use it in trade or sanctions decisions, and whether companies leave the settlements to get off it.
Where it stands. The list now holds 214 companies, according to the reports we hold. We do not hold the names of those added, the office's own account of why, or any response from Palestinians or the firms.
What is being argued about
- The UN rights office added 61 companies, bringing its settlement-business list to 214
- Israel's mission in Geneva says the list exists to persecute Israel
- Outlets disagree on what to call the list and the land
- No report we hold names a company or quotes a Palestinian
