UPI headline says a US nuclear-site worker 'aided' the Houthis; An-Nahar says the charge is an attempt and proves no delivery
US prosecutors have charged a 51-year-old Energy Department engineer from Richland, Washington, with trying to give material support to the Houthis. Two reports carry the arrest. They differ on what they call him, what the charge is and how far it goes.
The arrest. UPI reports that the FBI arrested a Department of Energy employee in Washington state for allegedly aiding the Houthis in Yemen. An-Nahar cites the US Justice Department. It names him as Ashton Hamed Elabudi, 51, an electrical engineer from Richland. It says the charge is attempting to provide material support or resources to the group.
Two accounts of one case.
| UPI | An-Nahar | |
|---|---|---|
| The man | Energy Department employee "at a nuclear site" | electrical engineer, named, aged 51 |
| The group | "Houthi rebels" | the Houthis, "designated by the US as a foreign terrorist organisation" |
| The charge | "aiding" in the headline, "allegedly" in the body | attempted support |
| What it proves | not said | no explosive made, no equipment delivered |
What the prosecution alleges. An-Nahar cites the Justice Department and AP. It says he travelled through Oman to Yemen in September 2025 on an official passport. It says he told border officers he was on a government mission. His supervisor says he was given no such travel. It also reports that he bought chemicals and drone parts.
What is not settled. - Both reports rest on US officials alone. Neither carries a word from his defence. - Only An-Nahar carries the trip, the passport and the purchases. We hold no second report to check them against. - UPI's "nuclear site" appears in no other report we hold. - The charge is a complaint, not a conviction.
What this is about. A US government engineer is accused of trying to help the Houthis, an armed movement the United States lists as a terrorist organisation.
How it got here. The Houthis call their movement Ansar Allah. They come from northern Yemen. In 2014 they seized the capital, Sanaa. In March 2015 a Saudi-led coalition went to war to restore the government they had pushed out. Yemen has been split ever since. The Houthis govern Sanaa and much of the north. An internationally recognised government holds parts of the south and east.
The war in Gaza began in October 2023. After that, the Houthis started attacking shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab strait, the narrow sea passage between Yemen and the Horn of Africa. They said they acted in support of Palestinians. The United States and Britain answered with air strikes on Houthi targets from January 2024. Washington later listed the group as a foreign terrorist organisation, and the listing took effect in 2025.
Why the listing matters here. Under US law it is a crime to give, or try to give, "material support" to a listed group, even without any violence. That is the charge in this case. An-Nahar reports a maximum sentence of 20 years.
The actors. The Justice Department and the FBI bring the case. The accused is a Department of Energy engineer from Richland, Washington. Richland sits beside the Hanford Site, a federal nuclear complex run by the Energy Department. No report we hold says where he worked. The Houthis are the group he is accused of trying to help. Neither report carries any response from them.
What is at stake. For Washington, the case shows the terrorist listing being used in a US courtroom, not only at sea. For the accused, it means up to 20 years in prison on a charge of attempt.
Where it stands. An-Nahar reports he was due before a federal judge on Friday. He has not been convicted.

What is being argued about
- Whether the charge is aiding the Houthis or attempting to
- His claim of an official mission, and his supervisor's denial
- 'Houthi rebels' versus a group 'designated by the US' as terrorist
- Purchases the prosecution says are used to make explosives and drones
