UPI says at least 21 dead in a Gaza City collapse, El Mundo and UN News say at least 20

A building already damaged in the war came down overnight in Gaza City. Three reports, on three continents, give two death tolls — and none of them names who damaged the building.

El colapso de un edificio dañado en la guerra en Gaza causa al menos 20 muertos
El colapso de un edificio dañado en la guerra en Gaza causa al menos 20 muertos as published by El Mundo · seen at El Mundo
Geopolitics & international affairs Palestine

Two numbers. UPI puts the dead at "at least 21 people". El Mundo and UN News both lead on at least 20. All three carry "at least", so the reports stop counting in different places rather than contradict each other.

One breakdown. Only UPI separates the dead by age — "at least eight children" — and only UPI says dozens more are missing. The other two give a total and no detail. No report we hold names anyone who died.

Outlet Dead What it calls the building Where the toll comes from
UPI at least 21, including at least 8 children "war-damaged" not attributed
El Mundo at least 20 "dañado en la guerra" not attributed
UN News at least 20 "bombed-out" "according to reports"

Nobody is named as having damaged it. Each report ties the damage to the fighting — war-damaged, bombed-out, damaged in the war — and each leaves the sentence without an actor. The building collapses; the building kills.

The one figure with an institution behind it is not the toll. El Mundo alone reports a senior United Nations official, unnamed, putting about 400 buildings in Gaza at risk of collapse.

Not settled. Whether the dead number 20 or 21, while people are still missing. Who damaged the building. Who the dead are — no report names them. And whether the 400-building figure is the UN's published position: UN News, on the same collapse, does not carry it.

What this is about. A building in Gaza City that had already been damaged in the war fell down overnight, killing at least 20 people, and rescuers were still digging on Wednesday.

How it got here. Gaza is a coastal strip of Palestine. Hamas took control of it in 2007, and Israel and Egypt have restricted what crosses its borders since. On 7 October 2023 Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel; Israel answered with an air and ground campaign in Gaza, and the war has run since. That is why a building can fall on a night when nothing hit it: all three reports say this one was damaged or bombed before it came down, so the damage was done earlier and the collapse arrived later. El Mundo carries the forward reading of the same problem — a senior UN official saying about 400 more buildings are at risk of collapsing.

Who is in it. The people who were inside, none of whom any report we hold names. The rescue teams still searching on Wednesday. The United Nations, which appears twice over: through UN News, the organisation's own news service, and through the unnamed senior official El Mundo quotes. UPI is an American news agency and El Mundo a Spanish daily; neither report we hold carries a byline.

What is at stake. Whether a death like this is recorded as a war death or as an accident. That turns on a piece of language none of the three reports supplies — who damaged the building, and when. It also turns on the 400 figure. If that holds, this collapse is a forecast rather than a one-off, and the toll for it has not started being counted.

Where it stands. Search and rescue was continuing in Gaza City on Wednesday. Dozens are missing, on UPI's account alone. The count is open at both ends.

What is being argued about

  • Two death tolls for one collapse: at least 21 against at least 20
  • All three reports describe war damage; none names who caused it
  • The dead are counted, never named — one report separates children
  • One unnamed UN official's figure of about 400 buildings at risk, carried by a single outlet
One collapse, three accountsSide by side

Nobody is named as having damaged the building

All three reports say the building was damaged or bombed before it fell. None names who did it: one writes "war-damaged", one writes "bombed-out", one writes "dañado en la guerra". In every case the grammatical actor is the building or the collapse.

3 reports that say the building was damaged in the fighting 0 reports that name who damaged it 0 reports that name any of the dead 1 reports that count children separately

Twenty or twenty-one, both hedged

Two reports lead on at least 20 dead, one on at least 21, and all three carry "at least". Only one report attributes its toll, and it attributes it to "reports" rather than to a body. The wider figure — buildings still at risk — is the one claim tied to a named institution.
