Both reports we hold give Hashim Thaçi 25 years for war crimes from a court sitting in The Hague. They differ on how many were sentenced with him, and on what he was president of. Neither names a person harmed.
Both reports agree on the number. Hashim Thaçi, 25 years, war crimes, a special court sitting in The Hague. Almost nothing else in the two reports we hold lines up.
They differ on how many men were sentenced. UPI writes that the court sentenced four former Kosovo Liberation Army members for "murder, torture and other war crimes". Life.ru reports Thaçi and nobody else.
And on what he was president of. UPI writes "Kosovo ex-president", flat. Life.ru opens "бывшего президента непризнанного Косова" — former president of unrecognised Kosovo.

What is not settled. Who the other three men are: no report we hold names them, and their terms are only "long". What the court is called: only Life.ru names it. Who does not recognise Kosovo: neither report says, so the qualifier rests on wording, not on anything reported. And the people it was done to: between the two reports, not one is named or counted.
A court sitting in The Hague has jailed the man who was Kosovo's president, for crimes alleged during the war that made Kosovo a state.
How it got here. Kosovo was a province of Serbia inside Yugoslavia. In 1998 and 1999 the Kosovo Liberation Army, an ethnic-Albanian guerrilla force, fought Serbian police and army units; NATO bombed Yugoslavia in 1999, Serbian forces withdrew, and the United Nations administered the territory afterwards. Kosovo declared independence on 17 February 2008. Serbia refused to accept it and still does; so does Russia. Many other states recognised it. That split is what the word "unrecognised" is reaching for, and neither report we hold explains it.
Allegations that KLA commanders had killed and tortured prisoners during and after the war outlasted the war itself. In 2015 Kosovo's own parliament created the Kosovo Specialist Chambers to try them: a Kosovo court, under Kosovo law, staffed with international judges and seated in The Hague rather than in Pristina, so that witnesses would be far from the men they testified against.
Who is in it. Thaçi was a KLA political leader, then prime minister, then president from 2016. He resigned in November 2020, when the chambers confirmed an indictment against him, and went to The Hague — the month Life.ru says his detention is counted from. UPI counts three more former KLA men sentenced alongside him and names none of them.
What is at stake. Kosovo's founders and its war of independence are the same story, so a verdict against them is read two ways at once: as a court reaching the powerful, or as a judgement on the state itself. That is why the label on the office is not a small thing.
Where it stands. Twenty-five years, in both reports. Neither says whether Thaçi will appeal.
