US strike on a wedding at Kuhestak, and Iran's reply
A US missile hit a house in Kuhestak, on the Strait of Hormuz, where a wedding was being held. Iran struck US bases in Kuwait, the UAE, Jordan and Bahrain in reply. CENTCOM says it does not target civilians and the strike is under investigation. The outlets do not agree on how many died.
What happened. A US missile hit a house in Kuhestak, on Iran's side of the Strait of Hormuz. A wedding was being held there. The Iranian Red Crescent puts it at 21:30 local on Tuesday 1 September — 18:00 GMT.
Iran hit back within hours. The Revolutionary Guard named US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, Iraq and Kuwait. Kuwait and Bahrain confirmed they were attacked. Jordan says it shot down ten missiles.
Washington's answer. CENTCOM says the US does not target civilians. Vice-President JD Vance says it is under investigation. No outlet in our set has tested either statement.
The next day. The Red Crescent asked the International Criminal Court to investigate. It warned the toll may rise, because some of the injured are critical.
The toll does not agree
| Reported by | Dead | Counting |
|---|---|---|
| AP · Al Jazeera · The Independent | 4 | at the wedding |
| UPI | 5 | at the wedding |
| Middle East Eye | 18 | in Iran that day, 4 at the wedding |
The 4 and the 18 are not really in conflict. They count different things. No outlet in the set corrects or even mentions another's figure.
What this is about. The United States and Iran are at war. This story is one strike in that war: a US missile that hit a wedding in Kuhestak, a fishing town on Iran's southern coast, and the Iranian attacks on US bases that followed.
How it got here - Iran and the US have been adversaries since Iran's 1979 revolution. For the last decade the main dispute has been Iran's nuclear programme. A 2015 deal limited the programme in return for lifting sanctions. The US left that deal in 2018, during Donald Trump's first term, and brought the sanctions back. - After the Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 and the Gaza war that followed, Israel and Iran struck each other directly for the first time, in 2024. In June 2025 Israel attacked Iran, and the US bombed Iranian nuclear sites. - On 28 February 2026, US and Israeli attacks on Iran started the current war. AFP, in Al-Monitor, reports that they killed Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Why the war began is disputed. Iran's foreign ministry calls it an "unlawful war of choice". - Iran then effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow sea lane between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. Al-Monitor says one-fifth of the world's oil used to pass through it. - Al Jazeera reports a 60-day truce, with fighting starting again in July. Al-Monitor says the ceasefire broke down after attacks on commercial ships. The Independent describes a month of limited strikes after that. On 30 August the US struck Iran again, and the fighting escalated.
Who is involved - The United States, under President Trump. Its Central Command (CENTCOM) runs US forces in the region. - Iran's government and its Revolutionary Guard, which fires Iran's missiles and drones. - Israel, which has fought alongside the US since February. - Kuwait, Bahrain, the UAE, Jordan and Iraq's Kurdish region host US bases, which makes them targets. - Pakistan and Qatar are trying to mediate, according to The Independent.
What is at stake - Civilian lives. Iranian authorities say more than 3,500 Iranians have been killed since February, according to Al Jazeera. We hold no independent count. - Oil prices and shipping through the strait. - Whether the countries that host US bases get pulled further into the war.
Where it stands. The reports we hold describe a return to full-scale fighting and no progress towards peace. Washington says it will expand sanctions. Iran's Red Crescent has asked the International Criminal Court to investigate. Neither Iran nor the United States is a member of that court.
What is being argued about
- How many died — and whether the numbers being compared count the same thing.
- Whether CENTCOM's denial is being tested, or only carried.
- Whether the ICC referral goes anywhere.
- Who each outlet puts at the trigger: the US, Iran's claim about the US, or nobody.
