Ynet names the dead Hasharon inmate as Abu Khdeir's murderer; Arutz Sheva calls him 'a 42-year-old Jerusalem resident'
Two Israeli outlets reported the same death in custody five minutes apart. One names the prisoner, the Palestinian boy he killed in 2014 and the three Israeli teenagers whose killing he avenged. The other names no one and mentions no crime. We hold only the opening lines of the second report.
Two reports, five minutes apart. Arutz Sheva published at 13:41 UTC and Ynet at 13:46. Both say a 42-year-old inmate held at Hasharon Prison died in hospital.
Only one says who he was. Ynet's Hebrew headline names him as Yosef Haim Ben David, "murderer of the boy Mohammed Abu Khdeir". Arutz Sheva calls him "a 42-year-old Jerusalem resident". It names no crime and no victim.
| Ynet | Arutz Sheva | |
|---|---|---|
| Names the dead man | Yes | No |
| Names Mohammed Abu Khdeir | Yes | No |
| Names the three Israeli teenagers | Yes | No |
| Says how the boy was killed | "beat and burned him" | — |
| Mentions an inquiry | No | Yes, citing the Prison Service |
Ynet names the killers as the ones acting. It says Ben David and two other youths went looking for a victim, found the boy on his way to the mosque, and "beat and burned him". It calls the murder "shocking" in its own voice.
Arutz Sheva has one voice: the Israel Prison Service. It says the service appointed a team to investigate the death.
What is not settled - Only Ynet names the dead man. Arutz Sheva gives the same age, prison and city, but we hold only its opening lines, so the full article may say more. - Neither report gives a cause of death. - Only Arutz Sheva reports an inquiry. - Neither report quotes the Abu Khdeir family or Ben David's family. We hold no report from a Palestinian outlet on the death.
This story is about the death in custody of the Israeli man convicted of murdering a Palestinian boy in Jerusalem in 2014. It is also about whether reports of his death name the boy.
How it got here. On 12 June 2014, three Israeli teenagers were abducted in the occupied West Bank: Naftali Frenkel, Gil-Ad Shaer and Eyal Yifrah. They were found dead on 30 June. Israel blamed Hamas. Ynet's account picks up on the night after the teenagers' funeral. Yosef Haim Ben David and two younger accomplices went looking for a victim. Early on 2 July 2014 they seized Mohammed Abu Khdeir, a boy from Shuafat in East Jerusalem, as he walked to the mosque. They beat him and burned him. Days of unrest in East Jerusalem followed. By 8 July, Israel and Hamas were at war in Gaza. Ben David was convicted of murder in 2016 and sentenced to life in prison. The two youths with him were also convicted.
The actors. Israel captured East Jerusalem in 1967 and later annexed it. Most states do not recognise the annexation, and Palestinians count the city's eastern half as part of Palestine. The Israel Prison Service runs Israel's jails, including Hasharon Prison in central Israel. Ynet is the news site of the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth. Arutz Sheva is an Israeli news site.
What is at stake. The story of the summer of 2014 is told with names on both sides: three Israeli teenagers and one Palestinian boy. A report that names the killer, his victim and the teenagers whose deaths he avenged keeps that record. A report that gives only an age and a prison leaves the reader with an anonymous death in custody.
Where it stands. Ynet says Ben David was taken from Hasharon Prison and pronounced dead in hospital. Arutz Sheva says the Prison Service has appointed a team to investigate. No report we hold gives a cause of death.
What is being argued about
- Whether the dead prisoner is named, and whether his victim is
- How the 2014 murder of Mohammed Abu Khdeir is described
- The Israel Prison Service's inquiry into the death
- What neither report says: the cause of death, and the families' words
