Ynet quotes Abbas on "genocide" and "settler terror"; the Jerusalem Post writes "he claims"
Mahmoud Abbas spoke to the UN General Assembly by video after the United States refused him entry. Three outlets treated his speech and Netanyahu's in three different ways. Only one report hedges a speaker, and the speaker it hedges is Abbas.
Abbas spoke by video. Both outlets that say why name the US. The Jerusalem Post and Ynet say the United States refused entry. They differ on who was refused. The Jerusalem Post says the "Palestinian delegation". Ynet says Abbas's own visa was rejected "again".
One day, three treatments.
| Outlet | Abbas | Netanyahu |
|---|---|---|
| Ynet | Quotes "the war of genocide created a disaster" and "settler terror", both as his words | Says only that he speaks tonight |
| The Jerusalem Post | "Extremist settler violence", unhedged; the E1 plan, "which he claims" would split the West Bank | A headline on planned protests; we hold no text |
| The New York Times | Named in the headline only | A "combative" speech, in the paper's own voice |
The standard differs by speaker. Two readings, each taken separately and without the outlets' names, found the same thing. One report puts "he claims" before Abbas on E1. One report calls Netanyahu's speech "combative" and names no place or figure. No report we hold hedges a claim by Netanyahu.
What is not settled - The walkout. Only the New York Times reports it: "dozens of delegates". It gives no number and no countries. - Abbas's call on Trump to lift sanctions against him and return to two-state talks. Only Ynet carries it. - Three of the four reports are a headline or a single paragraph. We hold the full text of neither speech.
This story is about the Palestinian president addressing the world's main diplomatic forum from a screen, because the country that hosts it would not let him in.
How it got here. Israel has occupied the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza since the 1967 war. Mahmoud Abbas has led the Palestinian Authority since 2005. The Authority governs parts of the West Bank. Palestine has been a non-member observer state at the United Nations since 2012. The war in Gaza began after the Hamas-led attacks on Israel of 7 October 2023. Violence in the West Bank has risen alongside it.
The UN's headquarters is in New York. Under its 1947 agreement with the UN, the United States is generally expected to admit delegates to the building. In 2025 the US refused visas to Abbas and other Palestinian officials. The General Assembly then voted to let him speak by video. Ynet reports that his visa was refused again this year.
The actors. Abbas speaks for the Palestinian Authority and the PLO. Benjamin Netanyahu is Israel's prime minister, and his government runs the war in Gaza. The US is Israel's main ally and the host state. E1 is a stretch of land between East Jerusalem and the settlement of Ma'ale Adumim. Israel approved building there in 2025. Its critics, Abbas among them, say it would cut the West Bank in two.
What is at stake. Every September, the opening week of the General Assembly is where leaders make their case to every other government at once. A leader who cannot enter the hall makes that case from a distance.
Where it stands. Both men spoke on 24 September. We hold four reports, all from Israeli and US outlets. We hold no account of the day from a Palestinian or Arabic-language outlet.
What is being argued about
- Who the US refused: Abbas himself, or the whole Palestinian delegation
- Abbas's words, quoted or paraphrased: "settler terror" against "extremist settler violence"
- One hedge on Abbas's E1 claim; Netanyahu's speech called "combative" without one
- A walkout that only one outlet reports, and without a number
